Triple Double

Oreo fans, are you sitting down? Arriving in stores as we speak is the new Triple Double Oreo cookie. That's right, we said Triple Double, as in three layers of cookie, one layer of original creme and one layer of chocolate creme. The calorie count on this Big Mac of sugary treats? About 100 per cookie with 1.5 grams of saturated fat. An original Oreo weighs in at about 50 calories per cookie. We're not sure if this is part of a bigger-is-better cookie trend -- after all, Oreos also come in 100-calorie Thin Crisps packs, although those lack the creme filling.

Basketball fans in the community of Galva, Ill., aren't seeing double, they are seeing triple. Galva High is on a fast break. Kraig Gale passes to Kyle Gale, who shoots. There for the rebound is Kevin Gale. Or was that Kraig on the rebound? Even their father, Bob Gale, has a hard time keeping track as the triplets run down the court. The three 6-foot juniors have led Galva's basketball team to a 20-4 record and the Lincoln Trail Conference championship.

High noon on Friday, an appropriate time for a shootout. According to plan, that's when the first pitch will be thrown signaling the start of what promises to be a wild weekend of baseball between Cal State Northridge and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. There are pitchers who throw fastballs with such force that they jump right into the catcher's mitt. Northridge pitchers offer a derivative--fastballs that jump right off a bat.
Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons trained some magnificent horses, a group that included Gallant Fox, Omaha, Seabiscuit, Nashua and Bold Ruler. Retiring in 1963, Fitzsimmons said: "Bold Ruler was the best I ever had, up to a mile. Nashua was a nod better than Gallant Fox at 1 1/4 miles, and Gallant Fox was the best at 1 1/2 miles." Fitzsimmons is the only trainer to have won two Triple Crowns, the first coming in 1930 with Gallant Fox and the second in 1935 with Omaha, a son of Gallant Fox.

Bruce and Shirley are indefatigable hambones, determined to make it big in show business. There's a problem, though. Both are so absolutely without talent that they can't get arrested in Hollywood. Or maybe they can--after they kidnap an up-and-coming film director in a desperate ploy to get cast. Sound familiar? It should.

Reporting from Phoenix -- Kobe Bryant kept scoring. And rebounding. And picking up assists. He finished with 36 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists, one rebound short of a triple-double, and it was all for nothing. "He was awesome," forward Lamar Odom said slowly, almost sadly. "Tremendous ballgame." Bryant was one of the few Lakers who played well in a 118-109 loss to the Phoenix Suns in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. He made 13 of 24 shots, all eight of his free throws , and was a one-man source of offense Sunday, be it by scoring or distributing.
