Like "Hot in Cleveland,"the show from whence it sprung, TV Land's new comedy "The Soul Man" is positioning itself to be retro-cool - a backlash against the high-concept, sardonic and/or emotionally strung-out comedies that have become so ubiquitous that "Nurse Jackie" is considered, technically, funny. Instead of three middle-aged women finding peace and occasionally wisdom once they abandon L.A. for Cleveland, "The Soul Man" sends former R&B star Boyce "The Voice"Ballentine (Cedric the Entertainer)

SUNDAY Make sure to watch the "18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards" — because if there were no actors, most movies and TV shows would be little more than 30 to 120 minutes of sets and scenery, and maybe a little music. (TBS, 5 p.m.; TNT, 5 and 7 p.m.) For a pastime famously dubbed "the sport of kings," horse racing certainly attracts its share of lowlifes, and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman plays one of them in "Luck," a gritty new drama from Michael Mann and "Deadwood's" David Milch.

TV Land, oh, TV Land. I feel I understand what you are after with your neoclassical original sitcoms. You want to make new shows in an old way, with people who were there in the old days, for people who remember them (the ways, the days, the people). I like the fact that you make room for middle-aged and aged artists the bigger networks often treat as toxic, but I wish I liked your series as much in their practice as in their theory. Even in theory, however, this is not a recipe for freshness.
