DENVER -- The smallest player on the court stood in a scrum underneath the basket. Andrew Bynum, the Lakers' 7-foot center, held the ball in the game's opening minute after getting his shot blocked by Denver Nuggets counterpart Timofey Mozgov. That's when Ty Lawson, all 5 feet 11 of him, reached in and blocked another shot by Bynum. The little guy was just starting to come up big. Lawson's tiny handprints and footprints were all over Denver's 113-96 victory over the Lakers on Thursday night at the Pepsi Center in Game 6 of their first-round series.

Welcome to the Final Four, the place amateur players love to come to . . . gamble? The week's most interesting news conference offering: North Carolina junior guard Ty Lawson's admission that he won $250 playing craps at a casino in Detroit's "Greektown" section. Tar Heels Coach Roy Williams said the story was being overblown. "I have zero problems with Ty doing it," Williams said Friday. Williams said he gambled earlier this year when his team came to Detroit to play Michigan State.

The Lakers turned to the Marshall Plan again, new point guard Kendall Marshall giving them another solid game after being plucked from the Development League. They're also open to fresh alternatives on defense after yielding 77 points in the second half and another big game to Timofey Mozgov, of all people. The Denver Nuggets' backup center shredded the Lakers again Sunday night at Staples Center, his 20 points and seven rebounds at the forefront of his team's 137-115 victory.

Among the highlights of my interview with the Denver Post's Nuggets beat writer Benjamin Hochman on the Lakers-Nuggets game: On the Nuggets' season: "They started different 20 different lineups this year ... It's been nuts. They're clinging on to that eighth [playoff] spot. But they hope they can get the fifth or sixth spot so they can play one of the L.A. teams and not San Antonio or Oklahoma City. " On a possible Lakers-Nuggets first-round matchup: It would be a good series.

Among the highlights of my conversation with the Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman on the Lakers-Nuggets series: --Hochman jokingly laments Metta World Peace's six-game suspension because that also means Hochman can't perform standup comedy with him anymore. The two apparently fed off one another, and Hochman remains unsure how he'll adjust: --Hochman explains the Nuggets' 11-4 record to close out the season --Hochman believes Nuggets small forward Danilo Gallinari will benefit from World Peace's absence.

Nuggets 126 - Lakers 114 (end of regulation) The Lakers gave up 69 points in the second half to the Denver Nuggets, falling to 14-15 on the season.  The Nuggets shot 54.5% from three-point range (12-22), led by Corey Brewer's 27 points in just 24 minutes. Dwight Howard was ejected in the third quarter for a Flagrant 2, committed against Kenneth Faried. The Lakers never fully recovered, although a fourth quarter run nearly got the team within five. Instead, Metta World Peace missed a lay-up and Danilo Gallinari hit a three-pointer to put Denver back up by ten. The Lakers shot 49.4% from the field but the problem on Wednesday night was their inability to get stops.

Sporting stylish eyewear and lounging on a doctor's exam table, North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson embodied fashion and relaxation the day before the Tar Heels' second-round NCAA tournament game. As Lawson held court with reporters, his teammates couldn't hide their amusement. Lawson's vision? Crystal clear. His injured big toe? Likely healed. The glasses and table? Completely unnecessary.

The Lakers and Clippers entered the season with more star power than a table at The Ivy featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Lawrence and Mila Kunis. So much for that. The Lakers are fringe playoff contenders. The Clippers, once owners of the best record in the NBA, are fading fast. It's not all bad news, though. There is a chance these teams could advance to the Western Conference semifinals! A look at the best- and worst-case scenarios for the L.A. teams in the first round of the playoffs: Best-case Lakers scenarios 1. Climb to the No. 6 seeding and play the Clippers.

The Nuggets scored 78 points in the paint, taking advantage of 12 first-half Lakers' turnovers to build a sizable cushion.  The Lakers won both the third and fourth quarters by a single point but it wasn't enough to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit. The playoff nostalgia has swept Lakers guard Ramon Sessions everywhere he goes. Shortly after he joined the Lakers from a trade a little more than two months ago, Sessions bought a television set for a local bar named Wagon Wheel in his hometown in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The enthusiasm for the purple and gold has spread so much that Sessions describes it as a "Laker town. " As soon as the Lakers officially clinched a playoff berth, Sessions immediately sensed he had turned a corner after toiling with non-playoff teams, such as the Milwaukee Bucks (2007-09)

The Lakers finished last week in eighth place in the Western Conference but suffered a two-game losing streak midway through the week. It took a big victory in Dallas to return them to eighth, with a 7-7 record. The team remains just one win behind predictions for Weeks 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 . This week may be the best opportunity for the Lakers to turn the corner. Coach Mike D'Antoni took over just in time for four games in five nights. The pace should yield results on the floor, in what could be the team's first perfect week of the season.
