UC San Diego clinched the championship of the U.S. International University's Classic 11 men's soccer tournament with a 4-0 win over St. Mary's College at USIU Saturday afternoon. UCSD defeated USIU, 2-1, Friday. Greg Schwartz, Robert Paterson, Kurt Bell and Scott Weisenberg scored goals for UCSD.

Eric Dingwall, Craig Gross, Scott Goodman and Rod Cramblit each scored one goal Monday to lead UC San Diego to a 4-0 victory over Southern California College in a nonconference soccer match at Costa Mesa. Goalkmeeper Tim Ramage had seven saves for the Vanguards (1-4).

Defending Division III national champion UC San Diego defeated host Cal State Bakersfield, 13-15, 15-13, 17-15, 17-15, in a women's volleyball match Tuesday. Janet Hughes had 18 kills and Ellen Chi had 15 for the Tritons (3-0).

Kevin Peterson scored a goal at the 64:36 mark to lead UC Irvine to a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego in a men's soccer match Sunday at Irvine. Peterson, a senior forward, scored from 10 feet on a header, with an assist from sophomore Bill Kollias. Goalkeeper Mike Gartlan, who recorded his second shutout of the year, had six saves for the Anteaters (3-5). Brian Siljander had four saves for UC San Diego.
The Cal Lutheran baseball team lost to UC San Diego, 8-5, in the deciding game of the best-of-five NCAA Division III West Regional on Sunday at UC San Diego. Cal Lutheran won the first two games of the series and entered Sunday's games with a 2-1 lead. The Kingsmen lost the first game Sunday, 11-3, setting the stage for the championship. Cal Lutheran scored three runs in the seventh inning of the final game to take a 5-2 lead.

UC San Diego, the third-ranked women's volleyball team in NCAA Division III, defeated Chapman, 15-1, 15-5, 15-6, in the first round of the Division III Western Regional Playoffs Friday at San Diego. Madelyn Ripken had 10 kills for the Tritons (26-6), who advance to the regional final tonight against Cal Lutheran. Shawna Parkinson had 10 kills for the Panthers (23-9). It was Chapman's first postseason volleyball appearance since 1990 and first Division III playoff appearance in any sport.

Qualcomm Corp. Chairman Irwin Jacobs has pledged $110 million to UC San Diego, the largest single gift in the school's history. The money from Jacobs and his wife is earmarked for the engineering school that bears his name. The gift includes $10 million payable over the next five years and $100 million that will be bequeathed to the school. Jacobs was a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the school from 1966 to 1972. He and his wife also have given $120 million to the San Diego Symphony, most of it in an endowment fund.
