Enrollment at the newly opened UCI Learning Center in Orange, the university's first satellite campus, has been steadily climbing since fall classes began Sept. 22, officials said. "With registration at the new UCI Learning Center in Orange topping 800 for the first academic quarter, our forecast of serving more than 3,000 students this year looks solid," said Philip Nowlen, assistant vice chancellor for continuing education.

A general information fair featuring certificate programs and courses offered through UCI Extension will take place from 9 a.m. to noon today at the new UCI Learning Center. UCI Extension instructors, many of whom also teach at the Irvine campus, plus program directors, staff members and advisory board members and recent certificate graduates will be on hand to answer questions about courses offered at the new satellite campus.

Career nights and information seminars on the 74 courses and certificate programs offered this fall through UC Irvine Extension will take place Sept. 10, 11 and 20 at the UC Irvine Learning Center. The first two sessions, held in the evening, will focus on certificate programs and career advancement courses taught by UC Irvine instructors or professionals in particular fields.

UC Irvine officials are calling their first off-campus learning center an extension of the extension, a satellite of the 32-year-old UCI Extension program to open Sept. 22 to serve North County residents. The UCI Learning Center in Orange will offer 74 of the most popular career-related courses among 1,800 classes offered each year by UCI Extension. The satellite program will occupy the entire second floor of the four-story building at 200 S. Manchester Ave.
