This may be the year that the University of California cleans some skeletons out of its athletic closet. Last fall, the Golden Bears defeated USC in football for the first time since 1977. Then Cal beat UCLA in basketball, snapping a 52-game winning streak by the Bruins that began in 1961. Now, the California track team will be trying to beat UCLA for the first time since 1968 in a dual meet today at Drake Stadium. Field events begin at 1 p.m., running events at 2.

UCLA today AT WASHINGTON STATE When: 2:30 p.m. Where: Friel Court, Pullman, Wash. On the air: TV: Prime Ticket. Radio: 570. Records: UCLA 21-9, 12-5 Pacific 10 Conference; Washington State 19-10, 9-8. Update: UCLA Coach Ben Howland said he expects a mix of zone and man-to-man defenses from the Cougars, who have won two consecutive games. The Bruins are closely monitoring Malcolm Lee's electrolyte intake after cramps limited the junior guard to 15 minutes in the second half against Washington on Thursday.
Kansas lost its shot at a national title last season when it lost to Virginia, so Jacque Vaughn lost his hair, and a few pounds. The desire to win a championship? The player from Pasadena's John Muir High and three-year starter in Lawrence, Kan., most definitely hasn't lost that. Not as long as he can remember what it felt like when Virginia pushed around and overpowered the top-seeded Jayhawks in the semifinals of the Midwest Regional at Kansas City, Mo., 67-58.

UCLA today vs. St. John's Where: Pauley Pavilion. When: 10 a.m. On the air: TV: Channel 2. Radio: 570. Records: UCLA 15-7, St. John's 13-8. Update: St. John's has lost five of its last eight games, but the defeats haven't come against a collection of nobodies. The Red Storm recently completed a stretch of eight consecutive games against ranked teams before pulling out a 58-56 victory over Rutgers on Wednesday. UCLA Coach Ben Howland said maintaining composure against St. John's pressing, trapping attack would be critical to obtaining a victory that could considerably enhance the Bruins' postseason resume.
