In some ways farmers markets are a natural fit at universities, where many students crave healthful, local and organic produce. However, schools are largely closed during summer, the busiest season for markets, and the managers - if students run the market - move on regularly, when they graduate. Such are the challenges at the recently established UCLA market, which is small and operates just twice each academic quarter but is a hit with students and staff. It's sponsored by Associated Students UCLA , a student-controlled nonprofit, and managed by volunteers from E3 , a student environmental organization.

UCLA basketball Coach Steve Alford is still trying to disentangle himself from the University of New Mexico. New Mexico says Alford owes the university $1 million, which was the buyout amount in a contract extension that was to take effect April 1, two days after UCLA hired him. Alford, in a letter to the school, has offered $200,000 under the terms of his previous contract. Alford was required to give 30 days' notice, so New Mexico officials believe he is therefore bound by the terms of what would have been his new contract.

Collin Mehring had been a growing boy and a somewhat unreliable contributor to the UC Irvine men's volleyball team for two years while being an intense student in the school's acclaimed computer science engineering program. And that's hardly surprising. Mehring is a walk-on. He almost didn't play volleyball in college. "You know," he said, "I wanted to be a student and didn't know if I could do both. " At the last minute, with a pep talk from his high school coach Mike Rubin - who was also Mehring's physics teacher at St. Francis High in Mountain View - Mehring decided to try to do both.

Former UCLA basketball Coach Ben Howland has listed his home in a gated Bel-Air neighborhood for $1,899,950. Built in 1999, the stone-clad home features an elevator, a home theater, five bedrooms, four bathrooms and close to 4,700 square feet of living space. The nearly half-acre lot includes a swimming pool with spa, a covered patio and a barbecue center. USC's Bryshon Nellum and Aaron Brown were the men's individual stars Saturday at the USC-UCLA dual track meet at Loker Stadium. Nellum won the 200-meter dash, something new for the 2012 Olympian, in a time of 20.37 seconds, and he won the 400, his specialty, in 46.26. Aaron Brown won the 100 in 10.24 and led the 400 relay team to a win over UCLA in 40.18 seconds. And yet it was UCLA taking a long, arm-raising, fist-pumping victory lap at the opponent's track. The Bruins' women broke a five-meet losing streak with a 90-73 victory and the Bruins' men won, 85-78.

The Olympics have come and gone for Bryshon Nellum. So has the pain in his legs that made his success in London last summer so amazing. His story was seized upon, correctly so, by much of the media in London, even non-U.S. outlets. After all, even in something as huge as the Olympics, how many athletes win a silver medal in a track event after being shot in the legs and told by doctors they'd never again be a world-class runner? More so, how many carry their country's flag in the closing ceremony?

Concluding a preliminary hearing that began late last year, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench denied a defense motion to dismiss the case, believed to be the first such prosecution involving a U.S. academic lab accident....

UCLA's spring game Saturday was going to cost UCLA students $7 for the bus ride to the Rose Bowl. Then Bruins Coach Jim Mora stepped in. And then athletic department officials rethought the matter. Mora had volunteered to pay for students' bus fare to the game, Josh Rebholz , UCLA associate athletic director of development, said on his Twitter account Wednesday night. On Thursday afternoon, athletic department officials decided to pick up the tab for the trip to the Rose Bowl.
