A two-alarm fire raced through a building under construction at UC San Diego Medical Center on Tuesday, forcing the brief evacuation of up to 1,000 employees and patients from an adjacent hospital wing, fire and hospital officials said. Eleven people were treated for smoke inhalation, officials said. Firefighters were called to UCSD Medical Center shortly after 11 a.m.

Employees of UC San Diego Medical Center, mostly African-American women, picketed the teaching hospital Friday afternoon to protest what they say is discrimination in promotions and working conditions for minority employees. The picket, arranged by the employees' union, was timed to greet accreditation inspectors who visited the hospital's expansion wing Friday.

UC San Diego Medical Center could go several million dollars into the red starting next year if the state Legislature doesn't approve passage of a $25-million bailout for it and two other financially beleaguered university hospitals, a UCSD official said Wednesday. New federal payment plans are taking a bite out of UCSD Medical Center's revenue and have already forced cutbacks in administrative and clerical services, finance director Thomas Astengo said.

With a substantial rise in tuition for most universities in California, it is crucial that the leaders of the California state college system think of creative ways to combat budget problems. Here's an example of how the administrators of our schools can help college students battle the increase in fees. I am a student at UC San Diego and I live in Hillcrest, where rent is substantially lower than in La Jolla. Since the UCSD Medical Center is located just two blocks from where I live, I have access to the shuttle that runs back and forth from La Jolla to Hillcrest.

You might say that Saturday's "An Evening With . . . " benefit for UCSD Medical Center was for the birds. And then again, you might not. But consider that menu chairman Audrey Geisel put quail on the dinner plates. She declined to specify whether the entree was a reference to Republican vice presidential candidate Dan Quayle, but did say, "Interpret it as you like--it might be a little tongue-in-cheek." There were a few pigeons in the capacity crowd of 565 who didn't get the joke.

UC San Diego Medical Center has begun talks with unaffiliated hospitals in San Diego County, trying to create a loose alliance that would be the fourth and final piece of the medical conglomeration puzzle in the county. If they succeed, the discussions would put together an organization of independent facilities to compete together against those of Sharp HealthCare, the Scripps Institutions of Medicine and Science, and Kaiser Permanente.

A prisoner at County Jail in Chula Vista was stabbed by another inmate Sunday, a Sheriff's Department spokesman said. Glen H. McNelty, awaiting trial on a charge of possession of stolen property, was stabbed in the lower back by an unknown assailant, said Sheriff's Sgt. Roy Hood. McNelty was treated by the jail nurse, then transfered to UCSD Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. No suspect has been identified, Hood said.

A recreational diver died of unknown causes Saturday afternoon off Coronado, despite the efforts of lifeguards and doctors at UCSD Medical Center, authorities said. Richard Thomas Brower, 48, of Glendale, Ariz., was transported to UCSD Medical Center after the Coast Guard responded to a 3 p.m. call of a "dive accident," said Alan Dusi, a spokesman for the United States Coast Guards of San Diego.

A man was stabbed three times in the back Saturday afternoon and was transported to UCSD Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition, San Diego police said. Police went to the 1300 block of Hollister Street about 2 p.m. Saturday after a report that someone had been assaulted with a deadly weapon. Police arrested a woman in connection with the stabbing but were not able to provide her or the victim's name. No other details were available.

A 76-year-old man was critically injured late Thursday night when he accidentally ignited a magazine with a cigarette lighter and caught his bed on fire, authorities said. Lyle John Arnold was flown to the UCSD Medical Center burn unit with severe burns to his face. He was listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. The damage to Arnold's Edina Way home was minor, fire investigators said.

UC San Diego's Medical Center in Hillcrest has completed a three-year, $40-million construction project that brought the existing hospital tower in line with modern earthquake and safety standards and expanded the hospital's outpatient care facilities. The project included structural reinforcement for the existing, 11-story hospital building that opened in 1960. UCSD agreed to improve the building's seismic safety in 1981 when the hospital was purchased from San Diego County.

A San Diego man was shot to death by a policeman Tuesday after he stabbed the officer with a kitchen knife. Hussien Roba, also known as Jilo Galgalo, 33, was struck three times in the chest by shots fired from Officer David T. Walker's service revolver. Roba was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he died several hours later, said George Dickason, county medical examiner's investigator. The incident began as an argument between Roba and his boarding house landlord, said homicide Lt. Barbara Harrison.

A 22-year-old Vista man struck four Bonsall boys Friday when he lost control of his car as he sped around a curve, the California Highway Patrol said. Francisco Otero was reportedly heading east on North River Road about 8 a.m. as he entered a curve at 45 m.p.h., according to CHP spokesman Tom Christian, who said the posted speed limit for the curve is 15 m.p.h.

A 25-year-old Campo man died Saturday morning when he lost control of his car on Old Highway 80, 3 miles east of Tierra Del Sol Road. Frederick Timothy Castello, 25, was driving east when he crossed the center line at 8:40 a.m. and crashed into the embankment on the northern side of the highway, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said. Castello was ejected after his car overturned several times. Castello was resuscitated by Lifeflight medical personnel but died at 10:40 a.m.

An unidentified man who was struck by a drunk driver in Imperial Beach died at UC San Diego Medical Center, officials said. The man, who was Latino and reportedly in his 20s, was struck by a car as he tried to cross the 1500 block of Imperial Beach Boulevard about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said. The man was hit by the car's left fender and was then forced through the windshield, as the driver continued west for about 200 feet.
