Bayern Munich completed its domination of FC Barcelona with a 3-0 victory in Spain on Wednesday to advance to the UEFA Champions League final against German rival Borussia Dortmund, which advanced Tuesday by eliminating another Spanish league contender in Real Madrid. Although Bayern Munich advancing to the final was a mild upset, the fact that it walloped Lionel Messi's team, 7-0, on aggregate was a surprise, even if Messi was hobbled the last month with a hamstring injury that sidelined him Wednesday.

Earlier this month a German court might have succeeded in doing what no soccer team in Europe has been able to do in quite some time, namely wound Bayern Munich. Whether the conviction of team President Uli Hoeness for tax evasion is simply a minor scratch or a mortal blow remains to be seen. But Hoeness' four-day trial, which captivated the country and embarrassed the team, couldn't have come at a worse time for Bayern, which is completing what may be the most dominant two-year stretch in club soccer history.

OK, by a show of hands, how many of you really want to see Real Madrid play Barcelona — again! — in the UEFA Champions League final? Yeah, thought so. But that doesn't mean it won't happen. There's little doubt the two Spanish clubs are the best in the world and deserve to play for the title. Real Madrid, which meets Germany's Bayern Munich in a two-leg Champions League semifinal series beginning April 17, is scoring at a record pace with 100 goals through 30 La Liga matches heading into the weekend, an average of 3.3 goals a game.

Manchester United's efforts to salvage a disastrous season with a UEFA Champions League title grew a lot more difficult Friday when the English Premier League team was matched against defending champion Bayern Munich of Germany in next month's tournament quarterfinals. In the other matches Spanish giant Barcelona will meet La Liga rival Atletico Madrid; Real Madrid was drawn against 2013 Champions League runner-up Borussia Dortmund; and England's Chelsea will play Paris St-Germain of France's Ligue 1. “As I said before, all seven teams left are very strong," Paris St-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi said of the draw.

Real Madrid added to its star power Sunday by completing what is reported to be a world-record transfer with the Tottenham Hotspurs for Gareth Bale. The Welsh winger will be introduced in Madrid on Monday to much fanfare, with the $132-million transfer fee eclipsing the more than $120 million Real Madrid reportedly paid Manchester United for the rights to Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. In a statement on the Tottenham website, Bale said he had reservations about making a move but admitted it would be a "dream come true" to join Real Madrid.

Ivorian international Yaya Toure has warned World Cup organizers that players could boycott the 2018 tournament in Russia unless that country takes steps to stop the kind of racist actions that plagued Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match between CSKA Moscow and Toure's English Premier League club, Manchester City. Toure said the behavior at Khimki Arena was "unbelievable" during City's 2-1 win, and he urged authorities to impose tougher sanctions on clubs that fail to effectively combat racism.

Maybe it was a passing of the torch. Or maybe it was just two ships passing in the night. Either way, you can be sure Cristiano Ronaldo is well aware of the turn his career has taken since he and Lionel Messi tangled in the 2009 UEFA Champions League final. Ronaldo, then the reigning world player of the year, came into the match having led Manchester United to three consecutive Premier League crowns and the previous year's Champions League title. Messi, meanwhile, was finishing his third season as a first-choice forward for Barcelona.

It's a good thing that Rafael "Rafa" Benitez speaks Italian because he should soon be able to read the handwriting on the wall in Milan. The Spaniard took charge of Inter Milan in June after Jose Mourinho, the celebrated soccer coach who led the team to Italian and European titles last spring, chased the money all the way to Real Madrid. But since Benitez's arrival, Inter's fortunes have fallen. The club lies fifth in Serie A and on Tuesday it was thumped, 3-0, by Werder Bremen in Germany in the UEFA Champions League.
