Looks like there's no escaping the dome just yet. CBS has renewed "Under the Dome" for a second season. That the network would want to squeeze more out of the adaptation of Stephen King's best seller, about a town trapped under a mysterious orb, is hardly surprising. It was the network's most-watched summer premiere since 2000, giving CBS incentive to take advantage of the open-ended option for the event series.  “We're excited to tell more stories about the mystery of the dome and the secrets in Chester's Mill, and are thrilled to have the master storyteller himself, Stephen King, tell the first one of next season,” CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler said in a statement.

During its TCA Winter Press Tour day on Wednesday, CBS announced the premiere dates of its two major summer event series, "Extant" and the returning "Under the Dome. " Both series boast Steven Spielberg among their executive producers and have a science-fiction bent, but their stories are very different. "Extant" stars Halle Berry as an astronaut trying to reacquaint herself with her family after spending a year in space. But her time in space has resulted in something very mysterious that the network promises will "change the course of human history.

Stephen King was born and brought up in Maine; but for winters in Florida, he still calls the state home. The remote, chilly state with its notoriously taciturn population has been the setting for many of his books, including "Carrie," "Cujo," "Pet Sematary," "Needful Things" and 2009's "Under the Dome. " That last novel, "Under the Dome," is the latest of King's works to be adapted for the screen. It's currently filming on location for a CBS television series coming up this summer -- but instead of shooting in Maine, the story has been moved more than 900 miles south, to Wilmington, N.C. The Times' Richard Verrier explains, "filming a television adaptation in King's home state of Maine was out of the question.

Television viewers aren't the only ones captivated by CBS' summer experiment with "Under the Dome. " The series based on the Stephen King thriller has shattered summer viewership standards, with more than 11 million people tuning in each week for the next installment. On Wednesday, Wall Street analysts were also clamoring for more details about CBS' efforts to create a new business model for event programming. CBS designed the sci-fi drama -- which costs nearly $3.5 million an episode to produce -- to be profitable from Day One.  Key to the arrangement was a deal that CBS struck with Amazon.com four months before "Under the Dome" debuted in late June.

With three more episodes to go in the season, "Under the Dome" is comfortably winning in ratings and viewership on Monday nights.  The CBS show, based on Stephen King's book about a small town trapped under a transparent dome, increased its audience to 10.81-million viewers and got a 2.5 rating in the key 18-to-49 demographic, up 4% from last week, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen.  CBS easily topped viewership and ratings rankings...

President Obama has been left on the cutting room floor of CBS' new summer series "Under the Dome. " An audio clip of the president that was in the first hour of the series that CBS sent to critics earlier this month will be cut from the episode that will ultimately air, a CBS spokesman said. The show, based on a Stephen King book, is about a small town that for mysterious reasons becomes enclosed under a huge transparent dome. In the scene, which comes at the end of the first hour, Obama is heard amid a slew of fake reports talking about what is going in the town.

The Stephen King experiment begins on CBS Sunday night, an open-ended series adaptation of "Under the Dome. " The novel ran 1,100-plus pages, but still the show's creators have been given free reign in taking the story in new directions, which could be interesting. Or not -- has anyone but the most deranged fans actually read the unabridged version of "The Stand"? The pilot spends very little time establishing whatever passes for normality in the seemingly idyllic town of Chesters Mill, Pa.,  before slamming a big ol' invisible, impenetrable lid on it. Like ants trapped under a jar, the various residents and a few interesting outsiders bang against the glass a few times before accepting the event with remarkable calm, although the stage is clearly set for a "Lord of the Flies" scenario -- "Revolution" in a teacup.

According to preliminary numbers from Nielsen, the series premiere drew more than 10 million viewers and more than doubled ratings from last year's debut of "Mob Doctor" in the same time slot. "Under the Dome" has proven to be a big hit for CBS, and its agreement to sell digital rights of the show to Amazon -- where they are streamed on Prime Instant a few days after they have aired on the network -- has been praised as a deal ahead of its time. But John Landgraf, the chief executive of FX Networks, sharply criticized the CBS-Amazon partnership at the Hollywood Radio & Television Society annual September luncheon on Tuesday, saying it undercuts the value of the network to pay-TV distributors and represents a "bad change in policy for the larger ecosystem.
