LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Michael Matz has had his share of life-altering moments. He was a three-time Olympian and carried the flag in the closing ceremony in Atlanta. He saved the lives of four young children after a plane crash in Iowa. And he was the trainer who watched over the life and death of Barbaro, perhaps the most beloved thoroughbred of this century. Saturday he'll send Union Rags from the No. 4 post as the second favorite in the 138th Kentucky Derby. Bob Baffert's Bodemesiter is the top choice at 4-1 odds; Union Rags is 9-2. Union Rags was thought to be the clear Derby favorite before an unfortunate ride led to a third-place finish in the Florida Derby.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- It didn't take long, two races in fact, for the main track at Churchill Downs to be upgraded to "fast. " So, barring any rain, the Kentucky Derby will be run on an optimal surface. After the first race, the track was upgraded from "muddy" to "sloppy" and then it was called "fast" after the second race. There were still some puddles on the outside of the track where horses rarely run. LOUISVILLE, Ky--Trainer Todd Pletcher has a good shot to win the Kentucky Derby with his undefeated colt Gemologist but he would rather talk about other horses. "I think Union Rags is still the horse to beat," said Pletcher. "He had a legitimate excuse last time. He was very impressive in the Fountain of Youth and he's run well over this track. " Union Rags' one race at Churchill Downs was a second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Meanwhile, Pletcher's horse has won twice over the Churchill Downs surface.

On Saturday, I'll Have Another will try to win the Belmont Stakes to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown winner and end a 34-year drought, the longest since Sir Barton won the three races of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, in 1919. As Liam Durbin wrote earlier this week in his handicap of the race , other than the fact that there are 12 horses in it, the field sets up well for I'll Have Another. His two biggest challengers will be Dullahan and Union Rags, with many experts picking Union Rags to win the race.

Despite a second-place finish for Bodemeister, both his trainer and jockey were very happy with his effort. "He ran his race," said Bob Baffert, who runs his barn out of Southern California. "He was there and just got tired a little bit. He's only run four times, and I was really proud of him. He's a super impressive horse. "It's the only time I've run second where I've been happy because he ran his race. " Jockey Mike Smith agreed. "He didn't finish first, but he's still a winner," Smith said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Rumors surrounding Creative Cause's status for in the Kentucky Derby seemed to quiet Friday when the horse wasn't scratched from Saturday's race. Trainer Mike Harrington says everything is fine with the horse and that there is no need for concern. The rumors started on Sunday when the horse arrived late for training because he threw a shoe on the flight from Hollywood Park to Churchill Downs. On Monday, he walked instead of running, and concerns seemed to grow.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Jockey Robby Albarado was arrested Friday morning and charged with assault in an apparent domestic violence case. He was immediately taken off his mounts for the day, including Hard Not to Like in the Kentucky Oaks, the fillies-only version of the Kentucky Derby. It hasn't been decided if he will ride on Derby day. He does not have a mount in the Kentucky Derby. According to a complaint filed by a woman who claimed to have lived with Albarado for the last year, she and Albarado wrestled over a telephone.
