Uniqlo, a popular Japanese apparel retailer often compared to American brand Gap, will open its first stores in Southern California this fall at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles and South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The company already has more than 1,300 stores worldwide, including 17 in the U.S. Of those, five are up and running in the Bay Area. The first store in the chain, which is known for its wide array of basics, opened in Hiroshima in 1984. Uniqlo is owned by Japanese holding company Fast Retailing Co., parent to Helmut Lang and Theory.

Type foundry and design studio House Industries and Japanese fast-fashion retailer Uniqlo have collaborated on a line of retro-looking women's T-shirts festooned with fun, fantastical fonts. The 16-piece collection of 100% cotton graphic T-shirts ($19.90 each) consists of eight long-sleeve and eight short-sleeve styles bearing all manner of all-over-print alphabets, nimbus-like numerals, patterned punctuation and the occasional Rubenesque ampersand. Maybe we're off base but the vibe we're getting from these is full-on late '60s -- the first thing that actually came to mind when we saw them were the "Mad Men" SC&P coffee mugs our fashion critic discovered at Joan's on Third a few months back.

So Beverly Hills has its Sprinkles cupcake ATM, really more like an automat, dispensing the luscious little cakes. And sure enough, people really do line up outside, especially at night, to order from a menu of dozens of cupcakes, even Doggie sugar-free cupcakes. In Japan you can buy live lobsters, Uniqlo clothing and sneakers. Miami's Mondrian hotel features a luxury vending machine called the “Semi-Automatic” that dispenses sunglasses, novels, 24K gold handcuffs, Rolex watches and evening gowns.

Casual clothing retailer Uniqlo carried out its assault on Japan's affluent and complacent retail industry with all the mastery, stealth and daring of a guerrilla band taking a smug capital city. The upstart patiently marshaled its forces in the shadows over a 15-year period. It liberally borrowed ideas and tactics from other innovators. At $25, general admission to the Museum of Modern Art in New York is among the highest in the nation. This month, the museum is promoting a word that its visitors don't hear very often: free. MoMA is kicking off a series of free-admission offers designed to draw attention to the fact that the museum is now open seven days a week. The museum is open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. every day except Fridays, when it closes at 8 p.m. MoMA announced Wednesday on Twitter that for the remainder of May, the museum is offering free admission to the first 100 visitors on Tuesdays.

Jones Apparel Group Inc. is set to sell its Barneys New York luxury chain to Istithmar PJSC, an investment firm that is owned by the government of Dubai, for $942.3 million after Japan's Fast Retailing dropped out of the bidding. Japanese retailer Fast, owner of the Uniqlo casual-clothing stores, said Thursday that it would not raise its offer.

Pottery Barn is opening its only outlet store west of Texas in the Outlets at Tejon, a 320,000-square-foot center north of the Grapevine set to begin operating in August . The 12,397-square-foot unit will be Pottery Barn's ninth outlet store in the United States. Pottery Barn had 193 standard stores as of Oct. 28. The chain is owned by Williams-Sonoma Inc. of San Francisco, which also runs an eponymous chain as well as the West Elm home furnishings business. In the third quarter, Pottery Barn same-store sales rose 8.4%, smaller than the 11.1% increase it saw during the same quarter in 2012.
