Since 1940, the Hollywood USO has stood like a beacon for wayfaring military personnel. Here, far from home, they could find a cup of coffee, a meal, a game of pool, a friendly conversation. On Saturday nights they could even find a dance or some live music. But all that is about to change. The USO--out of the limelight for years--has been FLOODED WITH DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS. The USO--chartered by Congress but privately financed--was founded in 1941.

On a December night in 1954, Los Angeles met the woman it would soon deem too hot for television. After the success of Vampira, the glamorous ghoul of 1950s late-night TV, executives at KABC-TV (Channel 7) cast Gloria Pall, a showgirl and model, as Voluptua, the sultry hostess of a new, love-themed movie program. Fans dubbed the statuesque Pall "Eyeful Tower" and "Miss Cleavage" for her shapely figure and plunging necklines. Her steamy on-camera poses and flirtatious comments soon earned her another moniker: "Corruptua.

Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Al Gray says it is "ludicrous" to send entertainers to visit American forces in Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf. The entertainment, organized by the USO, is inappropriate because it "detracts from the mission at hand," Gray told reporters Tuesday during a visit to this Marine training base. "We shouldn't be having any shows over there," Gray said.

The smell of pine will always remind Christina Iskandar of this year's holiday season. It's not just because of her Christmas tree, it's the "second skin" of pine sap and glue she developed this weekend while decorating Rotary International's Rose Parade float.
