The American public almost unanimously, 91% to 8%, supports a federal law requiring a seven-day waiting period before a handgun could be purchased, the Gallup poll has found. The proposal would enable authorities to determine whether prospective buyers were convicted felons or mentally ill. Overwhelming support for this restriction is found in all major population groups, including handgun owners (87%); opposition does not exceed 13% in any group.

A former Pentagon analyst who admitted scheming with two pro-Israel lobbyists and an Israeli Embassy official to influence U.S. policy in the Middle East was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison Friday for disclosing classified information. The sentencing of Lawrence A. Franklin, 59, of Kearneysville, W.Va.
