When it comes to hitting dingers, Mike Macenko is the main man. A member of Steele's Silver Bullets, a slo-pitch softball all-star team, Macenko hit 844 home runs in 1987 alone. An estimated 30 million Americans play softball and equipment manufacturers call it the nation's No. 1 participant team sport. It's a game that draws a diverse following and often provides a boost to local economies where tournaments are played. One of the groups that has both fed and benefited from softball's popularity is the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association, with headquarters in Petersburg.
