Nearly 10% of Nevada's 122,000 slot machines are being retrofitted after a decision by gaming authorities that players were being misled by a "near-miss" feature into thinking they were about to hit jackpots. A computer within the machines was responsible for jackpot symbols appearing much more frequently on the pay line than random selection would dictate, according to testimony at a hearing. But the computer, while tantalizing customers with near-jackpots, does not pay off any more frequently than other machines.

Gift: Under the heading of "there are certainly worse ways to get publicity," Universal has given an additional $250,000 to the Flight 93 National Memorial to coincide with its announcement that the DVD of "United 93," the film about the people aboard the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001, will be released Sept. 5.

AMDL Inc., a Tustin developer of tests for early detection of cancer and other diseases, said Wednesday that it has received a $2.4-million order for its DR-70 cancer test from Taiwan company. AMDL said in a press release that the Chinese Universal Technology Co. Ltd. will use the tests in Taiwan and Hong Kong. The DR-70, which has undergone clinical trials in five nations, can detect up to 13 cancers at the same time.

Fluorocarbon Co., a Laguna Niguel-based manufacturer of industrial products, has agreed to acquire the Grover Piston Ring Co. of Milwaukee and Universal Seal Co. Ltd. of Bancroft, Ontario, Canada, for $7 million cash. Fluorocarbon President Mike Hagan said the two acquisitions will add about $8 million to Fluorocarbon's annual sales and complement the company's other sealing manufacturing activities. He would not disclose the companies' earnings.
