America's appetite for a quick meal at home is forcing many food companies away from traditional staples and into highly processed foods that sometimes can be prepared in as much time as it takes to read the recipe for a normal home-cooked dish. Faced with changing life styles and intensified competition from restaurants, food companies are seizing upon the willingness among consumers to pay premium prices for such foods if they are tasty and easy to prepare.

The Supreme Court today gave states the authority to block hostile takeovers of their corporations. The justices unanimously rejected a constitutional challenge to a Wisconsin law that forbids outsiders to buy up and merge with a Wisconsin-based firm without the permission of its corporate board. Two years ago, the high court upheld a state law that gave shareholders the final word on whether to approve the outside takeovers.

Striking a serious blow to the nation's unprecedented wave of corporate mergers, the Supreme Court on Monday gave states broad powers to block hostile takeovers. In recent weeks, troubles in the junk bond market have made it more costly for corporate raiders to borrow money to buy out a corporation. Now, the high court has added a major legal obstacle as well.
