A desperately ill nurse from Laguna Hills was reported in critical but stable condition on Wednesday after surgeons at UC San Diego Medical Center completed the first combination heart-lung transplant ever attempted in San Diego County. Catherine Renee Williams, 34, a registered nurse at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, "should be able to lead a normal life" if her recovery continues smoothly, Dr. Paul Jagger, a medical center spokesman, said Wednesday.

The Drug Enforcement Administration granted final approval Wednesday for the first university study on medical marijuana in recent memory. Two neurology professors at the UC San Diego Medical Center will study the effects of marijuana on patients with multiple sclerosis and those who suffer neuropathy, or nerve pain, associated with AIDS. The studies are the first to emerge from the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research at the medical complex.

A San Diego woman suffering from emphysema became the third single-lung transplant recipient at the University of California at San Diego Medical Center after a four-hour operation Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday. Sheila Valle, 56, was reported in critical but stable condition after surgery, said spokeswoman Nancy Stringer. She described Valle's condition as normal during the first 24 hours after a transplant.
