A national search is under way for someone to fill the new job of Dean of Student Life at the University of California, Berkeley. Lynn Bailiff, executive officer of undergraduate affairs, said the role of the dean--something reminiscent of the protest-ridden 1960s--will be to supervise protests and enforce student conduct rules, but also will be to function more as a mediator and educator than as a police officer.
