Alan Heller and his wife, Claudia, traveled to Tucson last February for a gem show. On their way, they visited Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona along the Mexican border. The monument's namesake is the organ pipe cactus, shown here on the right. On the left is the iconic saguaro cactus. The Duarte resident captured this scene at sunset with a Nikon D5000. Sarah Miller traveled to Varanasi in northeast India in December 2010 as part of a yearlong backpacking trip through Asia. Early one morning, she trekked to the Ganges River to take a boat ride. She was captivated by the sight of these men, who were preparing to bathe in the river, which is sacred to the Hindus. It rained on the first day of Joey Martinez's trip to Madrid in April, but the puddles turned out to be a blessing. Ken Highman was in Beijing in March when he decided to enjoy the fine day by taking a walk through Beihai Park near the Forbidden City. Among the park's blossoms, he came across these young women taking photos with their family. "These young ladies in particular, dressed in their colorful costumes and having their picture taken, seemed to embody the excitement of spring," he said. Paul Hiller visited the Eastern Sierra in October to camp and photograph the changing aspen leaves. During his trip, he took a detour to Mono Lake to take in its splendor. "I captured this image just before dusk and was intrigued by the still water and incredible reflection of the blue sky against it, along with the symmetry that the reflections created," he said. Lee Cohen celebrated his 56 th birthday in April by trekking on the back roads of California's Central Coast. Near the end of his trip, he visited Oso Flaco Lake Natural Area just north of Pismo Beach. Standing on the bridge that spans the northern end of the lake, Cohen shot this photo as "the last rays of the sun shone over the ocean and the lake, ending a remarkable day on the California coast. Alison Lowell and her husband, David, spent a weekend at Castleburn Lake near Durban, South Africa last July. One morning, they encountered a scene unexpected for Africa. "We awoke very early to discover that everything was covered with frost and mist, and it all seemed otherworldly, as one hardly imagines freezing temperatures when they think of Africa," she said. "This one looked like a prehistoric condo complex," says Times reader "BoniPeluso," who shot this photo of Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado. Let's hope homeowners' association fees were a little more reasonable in those days. Spruce Tree House is among 600 cliff dwellings in the national park, whose Spanish name translates as "green table" in English. Mesa Verde is home to more than 4,000 known archaeological sites, some once inhabited by ancestors of the Pueblo people from about AD 600 to 1300.

Kenn Lee was in Chile this summer to visit San Pedro de Atacama. The Lake Balboa resident also hoped to cross into Bolivia to see the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat. Snow, tour operator issues and immigration officials thwarted that plan, and Lee's Bolivia excursion was trimmed to about 15 minutes. But before he was turned back at the border, he happened upon this abandoned bus. "It looked strange, colorful, so full of texture," Lee said. He used a Nikon D90. View past photos we've featured .
