Madeline Karabian captured this scene at Venice's annual Festa del Redentore, an Italian celebration first held in 1577 to mark the end of a plague. An impressive fireworks show lights up the sky each year during the festival, which takes place in July. "Everyone watching the fireworks celebration focused solely on the fireworks themselves, but I was much more fascinated in their stunning reflection over the water," said the Los Angeles-area student. Angi Brzycki visited Japan's Yakushima Island this past spring after learning about its numerous scenic trails. Rain dampened most of her stay, but the sky was clear on the day she and a friend decided to take a 10-mile hike. As they ventured through a forest of ancient cedars, the Urasoe, Japan resident was enchanted by the lushness of the vegetation. In August, Cameron Taylor-Brown and her husband, Charles, spent a week in Peru's Sacred Valley before hiking the Salkantay Route to Machu Picchu. Just north of Maras, the couple visited stream-fed salt ponds where the contrasting elements caught her eye. "The off-white grid of the salt pools playing against the dark clothing of this person feels mysterious and intriguing," the Los Angeles resident said. Taylor-Brown used a Canon PowerShot SD850. Since the start of this reader photo series, we've displayed destinations spanning the globe, from Antarctica to Kashgar, China. Now we're heading back home and focusing on sights in Southern California . You'd be surprised at what lies just around the corner. Times reader Andy Hoang submitted this photo of Pico House in downtown Los Angeles. If you've ever been to the Olvera Street area near Union Station, you've probably passed this picturesque yet unassuming structure fronting Main Street.

Each year, Julie Kirby treks out to Bishop Creek in the Sierras to catch the autumn colors. Last October, light snow fell the night before she arrived. She had set out hoping to beat the snowfall, but the precipitation turned out to be a bonus. "I had never photographed the golden leaves dusted with snow, before the cold turned them black and the wind ripped them away," she said. The U.S. Army Band was performing a concert concert on the grounds of the Washington Memorial the day Meg Foss and her family visited in August. As the family descended the monument, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment fired cannons as the "1812 Overture" played. Outside, Foss and her family spotted these soldiers. When on vacation in French Polynesia last November, Kathy Bonnell captured this scene as she sat on a beach on Moorea. The two boats were anchored in waters near the Moorea Village Hotel, and a long kayaker paddled off in to the distance. Jason McKenney was in the Philippines this summer to visit the town of Baler, northeast of Manila. During a boat trip across the river that divides the village, he saw a boy with two kittens, one perched on his shoulder and the other on his lap. "The solemn, piercing eyes of the child can capture a viewer's attention, as if he's on guard watching for any potential threats to the kittens he's protecting," said the Torrance residence. Darilyn Rice traveled to Madrid in March to visit family. On an excursion to Segovia, about an hour northwest of Spain's capital, she shot this photo of the Segovia Cathedral in the late afternoon as she hurried to her car. The weather was chilly, and the Thousand Oaks resident wasn't prepared for the cold. "I literally snapped it and ran," she said. Fortunately, luck smiled on her. Rice used a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS. Del Dickson and his wife, Ann, were rowing across San Diego Bay one June morning when they saw this osprey landing on a man-made nest atop a former telephone pole. The couple had laughed when the nest was built. "I thought they might as well put up a sign calling it a unicorn's best," Del said.
