Hali Helfgott traveled through Morocco in March but was not convinced about seeing the Sahara desert - a visit would require a 14-hour round trip by car. Thanks to her persuasive guide, the excursion turned out to be one of the highlights of her trip. "I was struck by the power and peace of the desert, how the sand goes on and on as far as the eye can see," Helfgott said. A new update to Dropbox allows users to transfer photos directly from digital camera SD cards and accumulate 3 more gigabytes of free storage online. "The latest version of the Android app . and the beta versions of our Mac and Windows desktop applications includes a new way to put all the photos and videos you take in your Dropbox called Camera Upload," according to the Dropbox Help Center. To use it in the Android app, you need to enable the feature when you first launch it. It asks whether you want to enable Dropbox over your data plan and whether you want to upload existing photos and videos.

To celebrate his mother Eleanor's 90 th birthday, Robert Murphy and his family traveled to Southeast Asia in December. In Thailand, the group visited the Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai, where Murphy's grandson, then-8-year-old Luca, met this baby elephant. Barbara Hartl was on an expedition to Antarctica in February when she came upon the Almirante Brown Antarctic Base, an Argentine research station on the Antarctic Peninsula. "What caught my eye was the bright red building," said Hartl. "So much of Antarctica is without much color, so this scene was in sharp contrast to the usual view. In northern Laos, he spotted this boy sitting with an elderly monk at a temple along the banks of the Mekong River. Charlie Kulander visited Arches National Park in southeastern Utah in December 2010, hoping to photograph Delicate Arch. "There was only one other photographer here at the time, a man from Germany who was utterly speechless at the unfolding spectacle we were witnessing," said Kulander. Richard Horn and his wife, Linda, were visiting Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia in September when they saw this group of children on a field trip. "I noticed one little boy who looked in our direction and gave us a sort of shy look out of the corner of his eye," said Horn. "So I just snapped a picture at that moment.
