Defending champion Brazil had little trouble defeating Mexico, 2-0, in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, Wednesday night to reach the final of the Copa America, South America's premier soccer tournament. First-half goals 17 minutes apart by Amoroso and Rivaldo were enough to end Mexico's challenge in front of a crowd of 10,000. Brazil will play Uruguay in Sunday's final.

Experimenting with new players and a new style, Uruguay Coach Pedro Cubilla said a victorytonight at the Coliseum against Mexico would help him convince soccer fans at home that the1-0 loss Sunday at Denver against the United States was an aberration. "The fans in Uruguay are not patient," Cubilla said Monday. "They want victories, not excuses."

Host Italy moved an impressive step closer to the World Cup here Monday with a 2-0 second-round victory over Uruguay. Its fourth shutout in a row put Italy into the quarterfinals as co-favorite with West Germany. The Italians will play surprising Ireland here Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Daniel Fonseca made his World Cup debut a dramatic one and lifted Uruguay into the second round. The 20-year-old substitute headed in a long free kick by Alfonso Dominguez with only seconds to go for a 1-0 victory over South Korea at Udine, Italy, on Thursday. Uruguay had to win to advance for the first time in 20 years. "I looked up and thanked God," Fonseca said after giving Latin American teams a five-for-five record in qualifying for the second round this year.
