OK, OK. I listened to you and only bought T-shirts with the wheat shaft in the proper place ("Logo Provides Clue to Authenticity," by Dennis McDougal, April 15). Now I have noticed the wheat shaft appears in the USA for Africa video in both the first "A" in Africa on the banner hanging behind the group, and, on the T-shirts worn by some of the singers, the last "A" in Africa includes the wheat shaft. What gives? You have reported one as the bootleg, the other, the real McCoy.

Some sang. Others danced. Most wore T-shirt declarations. A few stood at the edges before joining the line. A few backed away. . . . And whose hands were you holding that Sunday five years ago? May 25, 1986, Hands Across America, and the great public relations, social commitment, celebrity-supported event was the unifying yellow-ribbon spectacular of the '80s. For almost 5.5 million Americans, that Sunday produced 15 minutes of fame and eventually $16 million for spending on hunger issues.

The USA for Africa Foundation now has a Wells Fargo Bank vice president as a financial adviser and a four-person steering committee but reached no decision regarding what--if anything--it will do as an encore to Hands Across America. An all-day board meeting Tuesday, the foundation's first since the May 25 mega-event, was "far and away the most productive and the longest board meeting we've ever had," said Ken Kragen, foundation president.
