) Quarterback Malik Henry just finished his sophomore season at Westlake Village Westlake, and suddenly he's the focus of a recruiting battle between USC and UCLA. Both have made scholarship offers to the 6-foot-3, 180-pounder who passed for 2,362 yards and 21 touchdowns. What led to the scholarship offers? "I just think he showed he can make all the throws and is an athletic kid, and he's going to get better," Westlake Coach Jim Benkert said. Next week, UCLA is the leading candidate to get a commitment from St. John Bosco junior quarterback Josh Rosen.

It's a matchup of rivals fairly competitive in most major statistical categories. But there is at least one major divide between No. 21 USC and No. 17 UCLA as they head into Saturday's game at the Rose Bowl, which earns the winner a trip to the Pac-12 Conference title game. USC, featuring quarterback Matt Barkley and a fleet of speedy receivers and nimble tight ends, ranks 17th nationally in passing offense. UCLA is a lowly 103rd defending the pass. And it might be worse for the Bruins had they not benefited from a Pac-12 scheduling cycle that allowed them to miss top-ranked Oregon and quarterback Marcus Mariota , the nation's passing efficiency leader.

USC ranked third among universities in the nation behind Stanford and Harvard for collecting the most contributions last year, according to a survey being released Wednesday. UCLA garnered the largest total of gifts of any public institution in the country, although it placed 11th among all universities, state and private, the survey by the Council for Aid to Education found. Stanford received $931.5 million; Harvard, $792.2 million and USC, $674.5 million. The next schools in the report's top 10, ranging from $646 million to $423 million, were all private institutions: Columbia, Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, New York University, Yale and Duke.

Online programs at USC and UCLA were among those receiving top ratings in a new report to be released Wednesday by U.S. News & World Report, which also found that highly ranked programs are more common at established public universities than at for-profit online providers. The University of Southern California's online graduate computer information technology program was top-ranked nationally, the same position it held in last year's listing, while UCLA had the second-best ranked online graduate engineering program, moving up from 11th last year.

USC and UCLA are heading into this week's games with a chance to move up in the AP top 25. USC, 3-1, is currently ranked 13th and UCLA, 4-1, is ranked 25th. That gives the guys who cover the teams for The Times -- Gary Klein and Chris Foster -- plenty to talk about. And they will do just that on a Google+ hangout, right here live Thursday at 11:30 a.m. -- and available for viewing any other time as well. They will be joined by national college football columnist Chris Dufresne.

In the fall of 2006, Johnathan Franklin was a junior running back at Los Angeles Dorsey High leaning toward playing college football at Arizona State. Then he attended the UCLA-USC game as a guest of the Bruins. UCLA upset the second-ranked Trojans, 13-9, at the Rose Bowl. "After that game," Franklin said, "I knew I was going to UCLA and we were going to the top. " The Bruins aren't there yet. But a victory over the Trojans on Saturday in Pasadena would move them a step closer.

His teammates tried their best to explain, but Warren Edmonson did not quite understand. It was the spring of 1971 and the talented young sprinter had come south from Oakland to run track for UCLA. The crosstown rivalry was new to him. "We hate 'SC," the other runners said. "We've got to beat them." Only when Edmonson arrived at a dual meet against the Trojans did he truly comprehend. The Bruins' stadium, tucked neatly into a corner of campus, had been transformed by more than 12,000 noisy, agitated fans.

USC's basketball team battled back against Stanford at the end of regulation play Sunday to force overtime at the Galen Center. But that's when the Trojans' bid for a second consecutive Pac-12 Conference win came to a halt. Three-point baskets by Chasson Randle and John Gage in the five-minute overtime period spearheaded the Cardinal's 79-71 win over USC. BOX SCORE: Stanford 79, USC 71 (OT) "We played very hard today and had a chance to win," USC Coach Andy Enfield said.

Update: USC has won five of its last six games, with quality wins over Xavier, Boston College and Dayton. Only a one-point loss at Long Beach interrupted that streak. USC and UCLA are opening Pac-12 Conference play and are the only Pac-12 teams that haven't played a league game yet. USC freshman Nikola Jovanovic has already logged more points than did another talented Trojans player from Serbia in his rookie year; Nikola Vucevic went on to become an NBA starter.

Three days after the final weary snap of their 83rd football meeting, the battle raged on. Shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, making his first public proclamation as USC's new football coach during his debut news conference, Steve Sarkisian stuck out his chin. "We're here to win championships," he said. "I wouldn't have taken this job just to come home. I came here to win championships. " About 2:30, while Sarkisian was still talking, UCLA answered the challenge by giving Coach Jim Mora a contract extension though 2019 to prevent him from taking the Washington job that Sarkisian had just left.

USC and UCLA meet at the Coliseum in a renewal of a cross-town rivalry that annually determines bragging rights. Staff writers Gary Klein and Chris Foster examine the story lines: Passing fancy UCLA's Brett Hundley will try to join an exclusive club. Only three Bruins starting quarterbacks have multiple victories over USC. Cade McNown won four (1995-98), Wayne Cook two (1994-1995) and Paul Cameron two (1951, 1953). Five USC starting quarterbacks have won three UCLA games: Matt Barkley (2009-11)

Ed Orgeron coached as an assistant against Noel Mazzone several times during their long careers, including last season's game between USC and UCLA . But the 83rd game in the crosstown rivalry on Saturday presents a slightly different scenario. Orgeron is a head coach for the first time since his three-year stint at Mississippi, where he hired and then fired Mazzone as offensive coordinator after one season. Since replacing Lane Kiffin as USC's coach in late September, Orgeron has been making a push to prompt Athletic Director Pat Haden to remove the interim label.

Five things to watch this week in college football. 1. Stanford at Oregon is the game of significance on a pre-holiday weekend schedule in which a lot of teams are playing turkeys. Stanford's bruising style presents an interesting challenge for a fast-paced Oregon team that is battling significant injuries on defense. 2. Just as important as the USC-UCLA rivalry's being relevant again is the fact the game is being played at noon instead of at night. USC has lost only once in the series since 1998, that classic 13-9 upset of 2006, but UCLA enters this week looking nothing like the team that was embarrassed last year at the Coliseum.

The soon-to-be Pacific 12 Conference has the richest television deal in college history. And that's no accident. Rights fees for televised sports keep climbing, even in a challenging economy. Proof came Wednesday as Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott confirmed a new 12-year deal with Fox and ESPN that is estimated to be worth $3 billion. Randy Freer, Fox Sports Networks president, said televised sports is getting to be the equal of entertainment programming. "I think we're all making a bet on the future where we believe college sports and sports in general is one of the leading lights of generating large audiences," he said.

As if being 5-0 and ranked No. 1 in Southern California by The Times isn't impressive enough, St. John Bosco will get a little bit better on Friday night for its Trinity League opener against Santa Margarita with the availability of 6-foot-4, 305-pound junior offensive lineman Zachary Robertson. He has offers from USC and UCLA. He sat out the first five games of the season after transferring from Mayfair. Now he's eligible to join an offensive line that already features 350-pound Damien Mama.
