COLUMBUS, Ohio -  Pittsburgh basketball Coach Jamie Dixon has signed a 10-year contract extension with the Panthers. According to a Pittsburgh radio report, the extension was in response to job feelers from USC, which is searching for a head coach to replace interim Coach Bob Cantu. New Mexico's Steve Alford, whose name has also been mentioned prominently, also received a 10-year extension this week. Two sources have said Syracuse assistant and former Mater Dei player Mike Hopkins has interviewed for the job and former USC coach Tim Floyd said last week that he had spoken to Athletic Director Pat Haden in Arizona about the job and made the point to Haden that Floyd, though he quit USC, was never charged with any NCAA violations.

It was a vision former USC coach Tim Floyd had. To put Derrick Williams, Lamont Jones and Solomon Hill together and win an NCAA title. Then Floyd left the Trojans in the middle of a scandal involving the football program and basketball star O.J. Mayo, and Williams, Hill and Jones landed at Arizona. Williams became a national star with the Wildcats. Jones played two seasons in Tucson before transferring to Iona in order to be closer to his home in Harlem. Hill is still at Arizona and making life nice for Coach Sean Miller.

Michael Beasley can have his points. The Kansas State freshman forward has scored at least 30 points in 13 games and at least 20 points in 23 games this season, so it's almost a given that he will come up big Thursday in Omaha when the 11th-seeded Wildcats play sixth-seeded USC in an NCAA tournament first-round game. The Kansas State player USC Coach Tim Floyd on Tuesday said he was most intent on containing was freshman forward Bill Walker, who averages 15.8 points and has scored as many as 31 in a game.

Freshmen can make coaches question why they ever gave them a chance. They can also make coaches wonder how they ever got along without them. USC Coach Tim Floyd found himself thankful for the presence of Ryan Francis and RouSean Cromwell on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena after the freshmen keyed a late surge during the Trojans' 57-56 victory over Alaska Anchorage in the Great Alaska Shootout.

O.J. Mayo did not accept gifts or money while being recruited by or playing for USC, the player's agent said Wednesday. LaPoe Smith also said the NCAA, Pacific 10 Conference and officials from the school have not attempted to contact Mayo since August, when the former Trojans and current Memphis Grizzlies star became his client. USC on Sunday announced self-imposed sanctions on the Trojans men's basketball program, citing rules violations involving Mayo and Rodney Guillory, a former advisor to the player who the school referred to as a "booster."

Hold the Mayo. Love isn't all there is. The UCLA-USC rivalry is already generating plenty of buzz even without top recruits O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love, who by next season could catapult L.A.'s battle for college basketball supremacy into the realm of Duke versus North Carolina. Although USC can't match the prestige of fourth-ranked UCLA, the Trojans are a program on the rise and could present matchup problems for the short-handed Bruins when the teams meet at 11:30 a.m.

This much is mountain-lake clear to USC players. "Everything is pretty blurry right now," guard Daniel Hackett said about the Pacific 10 Conference race. Bifocals, though, are not required to map out the Trojans' difficult path ahead. USC plays four of its next six games on the road, starting tonight at Arizona. In that mix are four teams looking for a little elbow room in the conference standings, including the Wildcats, winners of five consecutive games, and 18th-ranked Arizona State, which the Trojans play Sunday.

So, another Southland college basketball coach is taking heat. Tim Floyd was here three years ago, when the former USC coach was accused of handing an envelope of cash to one of the hangers-on around star Trojans guard O.J. Mayo. Floyd, angered that then-Athletic Director Mike Garrett wasn't supportive with a roster weakened by the NBA departures of DeMar DeRozan, Taj Gibson and Daniel Gibson, resigned in June 2009 and has now moved on to Texas El Paso. The NCAA never found he had engaged in the alleged cash exchange.

Tim Floyd was introduced as men's basketball coach at Texas El Paso on Tuesday while his previous employer, USC, awaits the findings of an NCAA investigation into his actions when he was coaching the Trojans. Floyd resigned from his post at USC last June after allegations he gave money to an associate of former Trojans star O.J. Mayo. He had been working as an assistant coach with the NBA's New Orleans Hornets. Floyd, who had guided USC to three consecutive NCAA tournaments, has repeatedly denied breaking college rules.

Tim Floyd worked the room. USC's basketball coach smiled and laughed with Trojans boosters, listened intently when circumstances called for it, and posed for a few photos. What he didn't do was talk about the main issues confronting his program. Floyd appeared Wednesday night along with football Coach Pete Carroll at the Irvine Hyatt Regency, the first stop on a meet-and-greet tour with Trojans supporters across the state over the next couple of weeks.

When a team shoots worse at the free-throw line than the other team shoots from beyond the three-point line, it's in trouble. Such was the case for USC in a 75-63 loss to Stanford on Saturday. The Trojans were nine for 21 on free throws. The Cardinal was 12 for 22 on three-pointers. "A missed free throw is a momentum changer," USC Coach Tim Floyd said. "We missed free throws in key situations, as well. That gives the other team a big lift." This is hardly a new phenomenon for the Trojans.

The predicament facing USC became clear with 9 minutes 32 seconds left in the second half Thursday night when into the fray trotted sophomore Ryan Wetherell. As in walk-on guard Ryan Wetherell. A hip injury in the opening minutes had rendered sophomore guard Daniel Hackett unavailable, and freshman guard Marcus Simmons, one of only two perimeter substitutes, wasn't an option because he aggravated an ankle injury earlier in the week and may be out for the season. Short-handed USC hung tough against Arizona before fading over the final four minutes of an 80-69 loss at the Galen Center in front of record capacity crowd of 10,258.

Tim Floyd repeatedly refused to comment Tuesday on whether he had been contacted by Louisiana State athletic officials about their basketball coaching vacancy, instead reaffirming his intention to remain with the Trojans. "I've said from day one that this is my last job, so there's nothing else to say. It's a non-story," Floyd said. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." Eddie Nunez, LSU's associate athletic director for operations, said he could not comment on the coaching search.

This will require scare tactics from USC Coach Tim Floyd. Everyone knows that Oregon State is the speed bump along the Pacific 10 Conference road. The Beavers have lost 21 consecutive conference games, including a 69-46 pasting by UCLA on Friday. They are bad with a capital B. Such are the perceptions of the Beavers, and many of them are true. For example, Howard's only victory this season was against Craig Robinson's team.
