SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Even if they didn't have any other reason, USC and Notre Dame should play football every year just so we can tell John McKay stories. He coached the Trojans from 1960-75 and you don't need a record book to know he was successful. Just wander onto the USC campus. There you will find a $70-millon state-of-the-art athletic facility named the John McKay Center. At the south entrance is a statue of a man, his hand on his chin as if pondering his next one-liner. Legends get statues.

USC interim Coach Ed Orgeron hopes the momentum continues for the Trojans, who are attempting to extend their winning streak at Notre Dame Stadium to six games. Staff writer Gary Klein examines the story lines: Carrying over USC played five tailbacks against Arizona, a scenario that probably won't be repeated against the Fighting Irish because of injuries. Sophomore Tre Madden, who has started every game, suffered a hamstring injury against Arizona and did not practice this week.

* Time: 5 p.m. * Site: Coliseum. * TV: Channel 7. * Records: USC 7-4, Notre Dame 9-1. * Radio: XTRA (690), KMSL (1540). * The offenses: The quarterback question throws everything into uncertainty for Notre Dame, which will start junior Eric Chappell in place of the injured Jarious Jackson, although freshman Arnaz Battle also will play. There might not be much question about Notre Dame's game plan, though.

USC quarterback Max Wittek remains ready if needed. In the days leading up to last season's game against Notre Dame, Wittek was preparing for his first career start. Now he is Cody Kessler's backup. "I just take every day like I'm needed," Wittek said. "You never know when I'm going to have to come into the game. " Wittek started in place of injured Matt Barkley against then top-ranked Notre Dame and completed 14 of 23 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown, with two passes intercepted, in a 22-13 loss.

USC has a chance to end a disappointing regular season on a high note by spoiling top-ranked and unbeaten Notre Dame's chance to play for the Bowl Championship Series title. Times staff writer Gary Klein examines the game's matchups and story lines: No. 1 priority USC has not fared well against opponents ranked No. 1. The Trojans are 7-11 against top-ranked teams in the Associated Press media poll and have not won since 1984, when they defeated Washington, 16-7, at the Coliseum.

When does a rivalry cease? When does tradition become torture? Are history and effort enough to keep the torch of competition lit year after year, or does one of the teams have to win once every, say, couple of decades? Did the Christians and the lions have a rivalry? How many years, administrations or the return of Halley's comet have to pass before the most famous annual collegiate contest of modern time, the USC-Notre Dame football game, becomes just another game? Even the USC basketball team beats UCLA once in a while!

The USC-Notre Dame series, which resumes Saturday night at the Coliseum, has been dominated in recent years by Notre Dame, which hasn't lost to the Trojans since 1982. "It's been a great seven years if you're a Notre Dame fan," Irish nose tackle Chris Zorich told Frank Welch of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune after last year's 28-24 victory at South Bend, Ind. "It's the kind of streak where the other team thinks it's jinxed.

There's a lot of tension at the Raider training site in El Segundo this week. It's silver against black, teammate vs. teammate, friend going nose to nose with friend. And just what is the cause of all this tension? The club's 6-6 record? This week's crucial Monday night game against the Seattle Seahawks? The missing-in-action Raider offense? No, those problems can wait for next week. This week, there's another battle on the agenda--USC vs. Notre Dame.

Some people may say that the USC-Notre Dame game Saturday at South Bend, Ind., doesn't have the impact it had in previous years. The game won't have a bearing on the national championship as it has so many times in the past. USC has a 3-2 record, Notre Dame is 2-3. It is only the sixth time since the inception of the Associated Press poll in 1936 that neither team is ranked in the top 20 at the time of their game.

Todd Graham enters his second year in Tempe and the most exciting news is that he's still there. OK, that was last year's joke after Graham abruptly left Pittsburgh after one season to take the Arizona State job. Graham got to town with a shaky reputation, and it seemed as if he might have more hat than he did cattle. He worked hard, though, to make people care about Arizona State again as he repaired a brand wounded during the last, undisciplined days of Dennis Erickson and Vontaze Burfict.

The USC and Notre Dame football rivalry will continue for at least another decade, which will put the yearly tradition just shy of its 100th birthday. The Trojans and Fighting Irish have agreed to extend their football series through the 2023 season, USC announced Wednesday, continuing a tradition that started in 1926 and has taken place every year since with the exception of 1943-45. The Irish lead the series, 44-35-5. USC will continue hosting the games on Thanksgiving weekend on even-numbered years, with the Irish playing host in mid-October during odd-numbered years.

Notre Dame began the season unranked in the Associated Press media poll and is now No. 1; USC started No.1 and is now unranked. Oops, sorry, and welcome to my jungle. Pro pundits can pick the New York Giants to win the Super Bowl and still be right when the team is 7-7 in December. In the college ranks, Louisiana State in 2007 became only the second champion since 1869 to finish a season with two losses. Louisiana State Coach Les Miles is quick to remind everyone that both of the Tigers' 2007 defeats were in overtime, prompting his quip, "We're undefeated in regulation.

Things have taken a bombshell Baylor turn since we last convened, but don't worry, this is nothing the eight-team playoff in 2014 won't solve. What … it's only a four-team playoff? In that case, the selection committee replacing the BCS should form now, retreat to a hotel room with a copy of Sunday's Bowl Championship Series standings, and emerge with its clear-cut, no-debate test results. Show us how the new system beats "Death to the BCS. " It is terrific for television executives and scrapbook collectors that Notre Dame and Alabama have supplanted Kansas State and Oregon as the front-runners for this year's BCS title.

USC tailback Amir Carlisle is transferring to Notre Dame, his father told the South Bend (Ind.) Tribune. Carlisle, a freshman last season, was slowed by ankle and knee injuries but played in eight games. He rushed for 118 yards in 19 carries and had seven receptions, one for a touchdown. Under NCAA transfer rules, he will have to sit out next season and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining. Duane Carlisle told the Tribune that his son's move "definitely was a family decision.

Reporting from South Bend, Ind. -- USC faces Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday. The rivalry has a long history, and the Fighting Irish will be flashing a little something extra this time around – gold-flaked helmets, 80,000 'rally towels,' maybe a twist on the uniform. But, Coach Brian Kelly insists, it's not like they planned anything special. It's only a coincidence, Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly insists. Nothing special. No extra planning was involved.
