USC gets its first major test as the Trojans visit one of college football's most hostile environments. USC and Ohio State both have national title-game hopes, and the Buckeyes also have the weight of an underachieving Big Ten Conference on their backs. Times staff writer Gary Klein looks at some of the key matchups and issues: Leading roles In a college career only one game old, USC quarterback Matt Barkley reaches a milestone -- his first road test. There are kind, gentle places for a true freshman to play away from home -- Ohio Stadium, with 105,000 screaming Buckeyes fans, is not one of them.

No USC football player looked forward to Saturday's open date more than Chris Galippo . The Trojans' middle linebacker played nearly every snap against Arizona State and the entire game against Arizona, both of which ended with USC giving up more than 40 points. Galippo was unfazed after Coach Lane Kiffin told reporters this week that the senior's first three games this season were better than his last two. Galippo had three tackles against Arizona State and seven against Arizona, which rolled up 554 yards and 37 first downs.

On second thought . . . Chris Galippo once again is USC's starting middle linebacker. Devon Kennard is playing defensive end. The experiment that had Kennard manning the middle of USC's defense last season while Galippo was shipped to the second unit and special teams is over. Are the problems that plagued the Trojans' defense over as well? That's their hope. USC's issues during a disappointing 8-5 season went well beyond one key personnel move. Kennard did an admirable job learning perhaps the most important defensive position while playing through a hip injury that required off-season surgery.

After spending a week answering questions about their confidence, toughness and that embarrassing loss to Stanford, USC's players welcomed Saturday's open date. None, perhaps, more than middle linebacker Chris Galippo . While others among the Trojans' struggling front seven have been sidelined because of injuries or sat out plays because of rotations at their positions, Galippo has been on the field for nearly every meaningful snap this season. That, of course, includes recent blowout losses against Oregon and Stanford, games in which the Trojans gave up a combined 716 rushing yards and 102 points.

USC middle linebacker Chris Galippo said it last year and he still feels the same: No hard feelings. But Galippo admits that he especially looks forward to being in the starting lineup when the sixth-ranked Trojans play at Notre Dame on Saturday. Galippo, a third-year sophomore, visited Notre Dame as a high school junior, touring the campus with a group of highly rated prospects that included current Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen and USC tailback Marc Tyler . Galippo said Notre Dame Coach Charlie Weis was so intent on getting an oral commitment from Clausen that he neglected to speak to Galippo or even shake his hand.

USC linebacker Chris Galippo planned to stay in Ohio through the weekend to visit with relatives from the Midwest. The sophomore will have plenty to talk about after intercepting a pass and helping third-ranked USC defeat eighth-ranked Ohio State, 18-15, in front of an Ohio Stadium-record crowd of 106,033 on Saturday night. Galippo picked off Terrelle Pryor's second pass and returned it 51 yards to set up USC's first touchdown. It was reminiscent of last season when Trojans middle linebacker Rey Maualuga intercepted a pass against Ohio State and returned it for a touchdown.
