USC, which opened the season ranked No. 1 in several polls, had hoped to spend its bowl week in South Florida preparing for the Bowl Championship Series title game. But a 7-5 finish will send the Trojans to Texas. USC will play Georgia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 in El Paso, Texas, it was announced Sunday. This will be USC's second appearance in the Sun Bowl. In 1998, a USC team favored by 16 points lost to 6-5 Texas Christian, 28-19. Georgia Tech, which plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference, finished 6-7 after Saturday's 21-15 loss to No. 21 Florida State.

Outside, amid the swaying and chanting of thousands of fans in soggy blue ponchos, shock pelted the Rose Bowl like the cold rain. Inside, in an equally stunning turn of events, Lane Kiffin was safe and warm. In answering a question about his job security moments after an embarrassing 38-28 loss to UCLA on Saturday, the increasingly embattled USC coach said his position for next season had been assured and later told me to call Athletic Director Pat Haden to confirm. I did, and he did, Haden delivering the news that will stun many Trojans fans as much as their formerly top-ranked team's absorbing only its second beating by the Bruins in 14 years.

Renaldo Woolridge, a 6-foot-9 forward who played at Tennessee, said he was transferring to USC and is looking forward to playing in the 2012-13 season with the Trojans. Woolridge, the son of former NBA player Orlando Woolridge, will "walk" as a Tennessee graduate this spring and then complete a few hours of coursework during a mini-term that will enable him to play for the Trojans without having to sit out a season. Woolridge, who played at Studio City Harvard-Westlake High, averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds last season.

Dear Tennessee, It wasn't right for USC to take Lane Kiffin from you. You can have him back. Ted Bartscherer Pasadena :: Bill Plaschke's column after the USC-UCLA game included the phrase "embarrassing 38-28 loss to UCLA. " Excuse me, but since when is losing to a far superior team an embarrassment? The rudderless and defenseless Men of Troy should be proud they were able to keep it that close. The Bruins dominated every phase of the game … but then they didn't spend the past few months reading about how invincible they were.

Tony Ciarelli did not set out to be the king of aces. Too one-dimensional. USC's 6-foot-6 senior outside hitter spent most of his life honing a number of volleyball skills: serves, an array of powerful spikes and well-placed shots, intimidating blocks and efficient passes. Yet when Ciarelli is behind the service line for the top-ranked Trojans, the anticipation from teammates and fans is palpable. So is the dread on opponents' faces. Midway through the first set of USC's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinal victory over Cal State Northridge, for instance, Ciarelli boomed a salvo of four consecutive serves.

Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is coming home. The Los Angeles Locke High alum who played on two NCAA championship teams at USC and competed in the WNBA was hired as USC's women's basketball coach, the school announced Thursday. Cooper-Dyke, who coached last season at Texas Southern, replaces Michael Cooper, whose USC team finished 11-20 last season. "If you were to ask me what my dream job was at any point in my coaching career, I would always have said my dream is to come back and lead the USC women's basketball team," Cooper-Dyke said in a statement.

Thursday's matchup against the Trojans will be the first time since Feb. 2, 1962 that a ranked USC team takes on an unranked UCLA team. In that game, the Trojans lost to the Bruins, 73-59. Guard Ray Young doesn't buy talk that USC is the best team in L.A. this season. "I don't think the tables have been turned," he said. Senior Jason Flowers, who has started the last three games, said it doesn't matter what the records or rankings are when it comes to playing USC.

If the Rose Bowl is the "true" national title game that The Times insists it is, then does Michigan win the national championship if it defeats USC? Didn't think so. It is nothing more or less than another mythical championship decided only by sportswriters. Say what you want about the BCS, it is less biased than the AP and coaches' polls; the same polls (coaches) that arbitrarily elevated Nebraska over No. 1 Michigan in 1997, though both had won bowl games, and chose Alabama (AP) over a USC team (UPI coaches)

USC will open its men's basketball season Nov. 9 at the Galen Center against Coppin State - but the going gets considerably tougher from there. The Trojans, coming off an injury-plagued 6-26 season, play 18 games against teams that won 20 or more games last season. USC's home schedule includes nonconference games against Long Beach State (Nov. 13), San Diego State (Nov. 25), Minnesota (Dec. 8), UC Riverside (Dec. 15), UC Irvine (Dec. 20) and Dayton (Dec. 30). The Trojans will participate in the Maui Invitational and also have nonconference games at Nebraska (Dec.

The resurgence of USC football has been attributed to the arrival of Pete Carroll in 2001. Maybe the ghost of John McKay has played a part as well. Morning Briefing has confirmed that McKay's ashes were secretly spread on the Coliseum turf after his death in June 2001. McKay's widow, Corky, who died of cancer in April of this year at 73, reportedly was involved in carrying out her husband's wishes.
