Fans spilled onto the court and several took part in a brawl that erupted after Utah Valley State defeated New Mexico State, 66-61 in overtime, with first place on the line in a Western Athletic Conference basketball game Thursday night. The altercation in Orem, Utah, was ignited by New Mexico State's K.C. Ross-Miller, who threw the basketball about 20 feet downcourt in apparent frustration after the buzzer sounded, striking Utah Valley State's Holton Hunsaker, the coach's son. D.K. Eldridge of New Mexico State became engulfed in a horde of students who had swarmed the court, most presumably to celebrate the victory while others took part in fisticuffs.

A federal judge on Friday struck down Utah's same-sex marriage ban, making the state where the powerful Mormon Church has fought gay marriage the latest front in the legal battle over marriage rights. In a 53-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Robert J. Shelby held that Utah's law passed by voters in 2004 violates the federal right of gay and lesbian couples to due process and equal protection under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. “The state's current laws deny its gay and lesbian citizens their fundamental right to marry and, in so doing, demean the dignity of these same-sex couples for no rational reason,” Shelby wrote.

LAS VEGAS - Advocates for so-called plural marriages are applauding a ruling by a U.S. District Court judge that struck down key segments of Utah's anti-polygamy law, saying they violated constitutional rights to privacy and religious freedom. In a 91-page decision issued Friday, Judge Clark Waddoups effectively decriminalized polygamy in Utah, ruling that a central phrase in the state's law forbidding cohabitation with another person violated the 1st and 14th amendments. The ruling, which distinguishes between polygamy and bigamy, was the result of a lawsuit filed in 2011 by Kody Brown, star of the reality series "Sister Wives," now in its fourth season on cable TV's TLC. Brown has four "wives" - who together have 17 children - but is legally married only to his first, Meri Brown.

USC players have dealt with plenty of distractions during the last four weeks. Lane Kiffin was fired as coach, interim Coach Ed Orgeron took over and teammates continued to fall because of injuries suffered during and after a loss at Notre Dame. Not exactly ideal circumstances to consider potential bowl-game scenarios. But on Saturday against Utah, the Trojans play what might turn out to be the most pivotal game in deciding their postseason fate. USC has a 13-game schedule, so the Trojans must finish at least 7-6 to be considered automatically bowl-eligible.

Maybe this is finally the year. Maybe--just maybe--Larry Eustachy won't have to leave another Big West Conference tournament wondering, "What if?" Maybe the Utah State coach won't have to sit in front of another group of reporters answering their "What happened?" questions. And maybe Eustachy, a world-class pessimist even by coaching standards, will finally view his hoops glass as half-full. It all could happen. Now just may be the right time, although Eustachy isn't so sure.

Staff writer Chris Foster examines the story lines: Bad memory lane The answer is: receiver Derek Ayers. The question is: Who was the last player to score a touchdown for UCLA in the state of Utah? USC Coach Lane Kiffin is concerned about how young players will react when they play against Arizona State on Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium. But freshman safety Su'a Cravens is not worried. Cravens has started every game and is fourth on the team with 18 tackles. He has intercepted a pass and also forced a fumble. "This game was a great test before Arizona State," Cravens said after the Trojans defeated Utah State. "It's going to be crazy over there in Arizona and I think we're going to be ready for it.
