Another week, another must-win game for UCLA. A victory would make the Bruins bowl-eligible and keep UCLA in the hunt for the Pac-12 Conference South Division championship. Utah is also seeking a sixth win and a bowl trip. Staff writer Chris Foster examines the game's key issues and matchups: Old school There are no bigger proponents of the forward pass than UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel and Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow. So, of course, both teams are going to run the ball.

Rick Majerus said he had something up his sleeve, but everyone assumed it was a hospitality room doughnut. "A little plan," was how Majerus described it on the eve of Utah's seemingly doomed challenge of reigning NCAA champion Arizona in Saturday's West Regional final at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. "A little wrinkle our kids feel good about." Yeah, yeah, yeah, was the consensus response.

Much to USC's dismay, Utah forward Jordan Loveridge got hot from three-point territory in the first half Thursday night, sinking three shots from long range. Then his Utes teammate Brandon Taylor got in on the three-point act. And so did yet another Utah forward, Dakarai Tucker. Their long-distance display proved too much for USC, despite a late-game comeback attempt by the Trojans, and Utah defeated USC, 79-71, at the Galen Center. It was the 10th loss in the last 11 games for USC, which is 10-14 overall and 1-10 in Pac-12 play, which is why the Trojans are last in the conference standings.

In the Western Athletic Conference television game of the week, San Diego State's conference record dropped to 0-6 and its overall record fell to 2-14 in a 93-65 loss to the University of Utah Saturday in the Special Events Center. There was, however, a consolation prize for the Aztecs--the game was not televised in San Diego. The WAC basketball network covers most of the far-flung conference, and even goes into portions of Idaho and Arizona and, for some reason, Fairfax, Va.

The Utah players know what some people think. They know that winning a couple of Bowl Championship Series bowl games over the last six years hasn't convinced all the skeptics. And simply joining the Pacific 12 Conference hasn't answered all the questions about a mid-major hoping to break into college football's upper echelon. "Do they belong? Can they handle it?" senior offensive lineman John Cullen said. "We know we have to prove ourselves. " Their first test comes Saturday at the Coliseum against USC in a matchup that is generating more than the usual buzz around Salt Lake City and other parts of the country.

UCLA nose tackle Seali'i Epenesa remembers his visit to Utah as a sophomore in 2011. "I saw snow for the first time in my entire life," he said. Utah won, 31-6, on an icy field that became a slippery slope for the Bruins. UCLA defensive line coach Angus McClure recalls a field trip to Salt Lake City in 2007. "We went up there highly ranked; we were undefeated," he said. Utah won, 44-6, in game that had neither snow nor a UCLA touchdown. The Bruins return Thursday to open Pac-12 Conference play at Utah.

No. 23 Utah Utah had a dream decade — highlighted by undefeated seasons in 2004 and 2008 and we'll-never-know discussions about whether the Utes warranted national title consideration. It was a worthy argument, especially after Utah's emphatic Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama, which won the national title the next year. Utah didn't qualify for the Bowl Championship Series title game in 2008 but finished No. 2 in the final Associated Press poll.

SALT LAKE CITY - Steve Alford is unlikely to plan a Utah family vacation any time in the near future. The UCLA coach has not enjoyed his last two visits. His final game as New Mexico's coach was the third-seeded Lobos' loss to Harvard in Salt Lake City in the NCAA tournament last spring. His return as UCLA's coach was an oh-what-might-have-been moment: a 74-69 loss to Utah on Saturday. UCLA (14-4 overall, 3-2 in Pac-12 Conference play) was flat-footed at the start. By the time the No. 25 Bruins' effort arrived at the Huntsman Center, they were buried too deep.

It's back to Salt Lake City for UCLA Coach Steve Alford, as his Bruins play Utah on Saturday afternoon. This was the scene of a red-faced moment for Alford … or, a Crimson-faced one. His last game as New Mexico's coach was seeing the third-seeded Lobos upset by Harvard in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Salt Lake City last spring. Within weeks, Alford was at UCLA. Alford has had success in the city as well, with intense games against Utah when the Utes were in the Mountain West Conference with New Mexico.

USC tries to bounce back from its loss at Notre Dame in a game that could determine the Trojans' bowl fate. Staff writer Gary Klein examines the story lines: Spread the word USC is a 6 1/2-point favorite, which is worth noting based on the last time the Trojans played Utah at the Coliseum. The folks who run the Las Vegas sports books remember it well. On Sept. 10, 2011, in the first Pac-12 Conference game in history, USC blocked a field-goal attempt in the final seconds, and cornerback Torin Harris picked up the ball and returned it 68 yards to the end zone.

USC players have dealt with plenty of distractions during the last four weeks. Lane Kiffin was fired as coach, interim Coach Ed Orgeron took over and teammates continued to fall because of injuries suffered during and after a loss at Notre Dame. Not exactly ideal circumstances to consider potential bowl-game scenarios. But on Saturday against Utah, the Trojans play what might turn out to be the most pivotal game in deciding their postseason fate. USC has a 13-game schedule, so the Trojans must finish at least 7-6 to be considered automatically bowl-eligible.

Utah quarterback Travis Wilson suffered a hand injury last week, but USC expects the 6-foot-7 sophomore from San Clemente to start against the Trojans on Saturday at the Coliseum. "We kind of feel we know what they're going to do with Travis in there," USC interim Coach Ed Orgeron said Thursday. "And if the backup quarterback comes in, we do have a plan. " Wilson has completed 60% of his passes, 14 for touchdowns, with 12 passes intercepted. He also has rushed for five touchdowns.

SALT LAKE CITY - UCLA got an unusually chilly and ominous reception Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. A brief but intense pregame snow squall seemed another bad omen for the shorts-wearing Bruins in a place that was a house of horrors in their previous two visits, a huge loss in 2007 and an icy, embarrassing splat-fest in 2011. “Honestly, I didn't know what I was going to do. I started taping my wrists,” running back Paul Perkins said. “I psyched myself out for it, but when I got out there, it really wasn't that bad.” The squall passed quickly and the Bruins - after some nervous moments that included an onside kick Utah recovered with less than two minutes to play and then drove to UCLA's 23-yard line in the waning seconds - put their nightmares behind them in rallying for a 34-27 victory.

This was to be a year of watching and learning for Utah quarterback Travis Wilson. He was ticketed for a no-stress freshman season in which he could become acclimated to the altitude of Salt Lake City and the competition in the Pac-12 Conference. But Utah's quarterback of the future could be the Utes' quarterback on Saturday against UCLA at the Rose Bowl. At the very least he is on call. Wilson, who this time a year ago was throwing passes for San Clemente High, is Utah's second-string quarterback.
