Here's a no-lose proposition: You get better accommodations, you get them for less and you get other discounts. We're talking vacation rentals. Families or groups can save on the per-night cost versus a hotel, generally speaking, and by preparing and eating meals in. Rentals may offer more privacy than a hotel room and may even allow Fido, which means you'll save on the kennel bill. And now there are other reasons to rent.

Whether you've tracked in snow, mud, dirt or sand, there's no reason you should trouble yourself with scrubbing the floors of your weekend getaway or vacation rental. Just let loose the new Scooba 450 , a little robot floor mopper from the same folks who created the popular do-it-itself iRobot Roomba carpet vacuum. The Scooba 450 is a 14 1/2 -inch-diameter rechargeable disk that automatically propels its 9-pound self across wood, tile (or any uncarpeted floor), spinning and spiraling around the room, its sensors gauging the size of the floor, and redirecting its efforts when it bumps into a wall or other obstruction.

No doubt about it: Peer-to-peer vacation rentals - that is, short-term rentals done through such sites as Airbnb or Wimdu - usually are a bargain. They enable you to save money by letting you dine in for a meal or two because most come with access to a kitchen. But some are far away from the attractions that were the impetus for the vacation in the first place, which means getting there can cause the bargain to lose some luster. Further, some owners have found they are at risk: In a case that created plenty of social media buzz, one owner in San Francisco complained that her place had been trashed.

The next time you see a hotel manager striding across the lobby with furrowed brow, look again. He may not be worrying about the guy in 415, the group in the banquet room, or even the recession that has driven room rates to their lowest levels in years. Instead, he might be thinking about the likes of Carlos A. Hernandez of Los Angeles, who has decided he likes vacation rentals better than hotels. Or Robert Bell, a retired airline pilot in Long Beach, who has been won over by cruises.

If you're thinking about renting a home for your summer vacation, a relatively new site, www.pickpackgo.com, launched in September, may make the search easier. What's hot: Search by location (including international), dates and the number of bedrooms. Results show listings of vacation rentals offered by property managers, with photos, amenities, maps and destination. Calendars show availability. What's not: The site says it has about 66,000 listings. A competitor, Vacation Rentals by Owner, www.

Your readers may want to know that there is a low-cost alternative to renting a villa of their own. We recently stayed in a home every bit as wonderful as some of those described in your Vacation Rentals issue (April 12) . . . except there was no charge other than the minimal ($75) membership fee of the home-exchange agency. We used Trading Homes International of Hermosa Beach, telephone (800) 877-8723. And while we stayed in the comfort of their home, our English exchange partners took wonderful care of our home (including our dog!

Fans of the quieter side of Catalina Island, rejoice. Quiet and rustic Two Harbors is going a bit posh with two new vacation rental homes that elevate the lodgings lineup offered on the western end of the island. It's one thing to manage a rental house when it's nearby. But it's another process entirely when the rental is in a distant vacation retreat. Unfortunately, many second-home buyers find that out the hard way. According to a survey by HomeAway, an online marketplace for vacation rentals, owners spend an average of 8.6 hours a week managing their properties. That's one full workday a week. And even then, it's doubtful that the typical owner can market his vacation pad, maintain it and do all the other things necessary to have a successful rental regime.

Here's a website that helps you locate vacation rentals in proximity to your interests. Name: Pinocular.com What it does: It lets you search based on activities you like and how far you want to drive or fly from major cities in the U.S. and Europe. There are 85 activities to choose from or combine. What's hot: It's helpful that Pinocular pairs vacation rental options with activities I am interested in - and some I hadn't even considered. I could find properties that are near horseback riding, fishing, hot springs, opera, laser tag, geocaching and more.

Despite working 18-hour days, including part time as a waitress at a strip club, Hope Arnold was on the verge of losing her Silver Lake home. Then she discovered Airbnb, a website that links vacationers seeking an alternative to hotels and homeowners with rooms to rent. Billing her place as an "artsy and rustic 1927 treehouse," she started renting out her master bedroom, while she slept in the den. It paid off. Arnold has made $39,000 on Airbnb in the last 12 months, and the site now accounts for as much as 70% of her monthly income.

I just read Catharine Hamm's article "How to Think Outside the Boxy Hotel Room" [Jan. 4]. I know that I'm too squeamish (Strangers sleeping in our bed? I don't think so!) to house swap, but we've discovered VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner), www.vrbo.com. There are ranges from reasonable to expensive in every area of our country. Tip: Ask if the condo is also a vacation home for the family, since they come well-equipped. On Hawaii's Big Island, we stayed at a lovely, spacious, ocean-view condo that was so well-equipped it was like a second home: games, DVDs, gourmet accessories in the kitchen, beach equipment and even a set of golf clubs.

You plan your escape to the airport carefully, calculating the distance, checking the traffic and printing out your boarding pass. But there is one unknown for which you can't prepare - the length of the security line. There's no way to tell how bad it's going to be until you get there. Unless you're flying out of the main terminal of Dulles International Airport. The airport outside Washington is the first in the nation to adopt a video analytics system to continually count the number of people in the security lines.
