The voice on the phone was familiar, if a bit weak. It's been a tough year, John Wooden said, reluctantly, because he doesn't like to make a fuss. He was in his Encino condominium, and had just been asked about the flu he'd fought off in January and the bone-breaking tumble he'd taken soon after. "It's been a bit hard, but I'm getting better," he assured. "Now, if Val's team performs to their abilities this week, that would put a smile on my face."

She owns up to a youth spent drinking too much, smoking too many cigarettes, hosting and attending too many parties, missing too many curfews. Senior Kate Richardson has accomplished nearly all of her goals during her gymnastics career at UCLA. She's a 10-time All-American who has been on two national championship teams, a winner of two individual NCAA titles and owner of nine perfect-10 scores. "I've had a ton of great memories and some really good times," said Richardson, who will compete in her final home meet today at Pauley Pavilion when UCLA plays host to Stanford and San Jose State at 2 p.m.
