He has an electric fan to keep cool, a portable Jacuzzi to keep loose and a personal attendant to help him keep fit, trim and looking good. Despite all this, Beelzebub is not completely satisfied. He wants another carrot and he wants it now. He whinnies, snorts, and kicks the door of his stall until his owner and rider, Valerie Parr, finally gives in. "Oh, you spoiled horse!" Parr, a 33-year-old Santa Ana resident, says as she pulls the last carrot from a bag. "This is your last one.

Teamwork: Valerie Parr, an equestrian participant from Santa Ana has a good working relationship with her horse, Beelzebub. It's been that way from the moment they met in March. "I liked him, he liked me," Parr said. "That's important. But the best thing about him is he's a teacher, a good teacher. If you ride well, he'll perform well. If you ride bad, he won't ride well. But he won't hurt you or hold a grudge.

White tents pitched on the lawn. A grass arena filled with colorful jumping fences. Top-notch horses and riders. Shade trees that dot the picturesque park. This was the scene of GTE's "The Everything Pages" Summer Classic V, a benefit equestrian event that continues today and Sunday at Huntington Central Park. Since 1990, the Summer Classic, which started Wednesday, has been the No. 1 fund-raiser for the Huntington Beach Art Center.

Joseph Blair of Arizona scored 21 points and Burt Harris of USC added 18 as the West opened the U.S. Olympic Festival basketball competition with a 117-111 victory over the South. The West, which outrebounded the South, 73-52, overcame a seven-point halftime deficit. In the late men's game, Derek Anderson of Ohio State scored 29 points as the North beat the East, 129-120. His Ohio State teammate, Gary Trent, had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

While some sports at the U.S. Olympic Festival are showcasing their top athletes, others are not. Swimming, for example, excluded swimmers who have competed internationally. And in the equestrian competition, top athletes were allowed but didn't show up and top horses were available but were not allowed. In show jumping, one of the two equestrian disciplines on display at the L.A. Equestrian Center, the horses are not ready for the 1992 Olympics and neither are most of the riders.

Aaron Boone got a phone call late Friday night from La Quinta High baseball Coach Dave Demarest, an assistant coach on the Olympic Festival's West team. "He told me to be suited up and be at (USC's) Dedeaux Field by 8:15 a.m. this morning," Boone said. Boone, a graduate of Villa Park High School, was one of two players added to the West baseball roster Saturday morning.
