A man was shot and killed at his home Friday night shortly after refusing to allow several gang members inside during a party, authorities said. The victim, whose name was not released, was struck in the chest about 10:40 p.m. in the 18100 block of Northam Street, an unincorporated area near the city of Industry. Also wounded in the attack was a girl who was asleep in a nearby home.

A sheriff's deputy shot a man in the leg early Sunday in unincorporated Valinda after the man allegedly pointed a gun at him, authorities said. Deputies at the sheriff's station in the City of Industry responded to a call of shots fired at 1:22 a.m. near Blackwood Street and Aldgate Avenue, said Deputy Steve Suzuki. The deputies said they saw two men getting out of a parked car and that one was holding a handgun. The men ran in different directions and deputies blocked off the area, Suzuki said.

You could judge this suburb in a drive-by glimpse: the cholos throwing cold stares from the sidewalk, the tangle of gang graffiti on fences and posts, the men bent under the hoods of keeling old trucks. You could decide that the only things notable in Valinda, this unincorporated San Gabriel Valley community next to La Puente and West Covina, are crime and poverty.
