People of the Book, the Jewish book festival featuring more than 20 authors and 25 events, starts Wednesday and runs through Nov. 22 at the West Valley Jewish Community Center, 22622 Vanowen St., West Hills; the Westside Jewish Community Center, 5870 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles; and at the Valley Cities Jewish Community Center, 13164 Burbank Blvd., Sherman Oaks. The festival celebrates Jewish authors and books on Jewish subjects.

Nine children suffered minor injuries Tuesday when a chartered bus was struck in a chain collision that also involved an armored car, authorities said. The bus, carrying children from the Valley Cities Jewish Community Center in Van Nuys, was hit about 11:30 a.m. by a pickup that had been struck by a Brinks Inc. armored truck, said Officer Rhett Price of the California Highway Patrol.

In an attempt to improve living conditions in specific areas of the 5th Council District, Councilman Mike Feuer has scheduled community meetings to establish pilot "Livable Neighborhood Councils." "The purpose of the councils will be to involve enthusiastic and committed members of the community in shaping the quality of life in their respective neighborhoods," Feuer said.
