Thirteen workers were treated Thursday after inhaling nitric acid, a chemical used in stripping paint, at a Sylmar aircraft parts manufacturing firm, authorities said. The incident occurred at about 2 p.m. at Valley-Todeco Inc. in the 12900 block of Bradley Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Greg Acevedo said. He had no details on how the chemical was released.

Ripples from the 2-month-old strike against Boeing Co. are disrupting some of the airplane builder's subcontractors, including Northrop Grumman Corp., which Wednesday announced a two-week furlough of 6,450 workers--including 1,000 in Hawthorne--because of the walkout. Several airlines are also having to juggle their flight schedules because the strike is delaying their ability to take delivery of Boeing jets they have ordered.

Southern California's air quality board on Friday approved a hotly disputed measure that will force large industrial polluters to reduce the cancer threats they pose in residential neighborhoods. Businesses must meet a new limit that reduces the cancer risk 75% from the standard set by the South Coast Air Quality Management District six years ago.
