Valley View, known for its pitching, did it all in defeating defending champion Mater Dei, 5-0, Saturday night in the Southern Section Division I softball title game before about 2,200 at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. The Eagles got their typical outstanding pitching performance from Keira Goerl, who struck out seven, walked two and allowed only one hit. Goerl (23-1) retired the first 16 batters before surrendering a sixth-inning single to Casie Phillips.
The hilltop Bel Air Presbyterian Church, whose membership is drawn from both sides of the Santa Monica Mountains, will conduct its first Sunday services today in a $13.5-million church complex that features a picture-window view of the San Fernando Valley. The congregation filled its 1,500-seat sanctuary to overflowing for a Friday night dedication service featuring views of twinkling city lights below, a string-accompanied 60-voice choir and nymph-like liturgical dancers. High school softball coaches say any discussion of the top team in the Southland this season begins and ends with defending Division I champion Moreno Valley Valley View. Mary Partida, Valley View's coach, is not so sure. "We're good," she said, "but the bottom line is that on any given day, anybody can beat anybody." Few defeat Valley View pitcher Keira Goerl. Last season, the UCLA-bound senior went 23-1 as Valley View won the Southern Section Division I championship.
Morningside High football Coach Ron Tatum was in landlocked Moreno Valley Saturday night, but that didn't stop him from checking out the waves. Play after play, Tatum watched in awe as the Valley View offensive line swept over West Torrance's defense to open holes for tailbacks David Dotson and Kareem Booker in a 42-20 Southern Section playoff victory. "They like to get three waves of blockers in front of their backs," said Tatum, who scouted the game.

"I used to win like crazy," my friend Juanita Mendonca would tell me. "Every slot machine turned to gold. I'd come home and my purse would be stuffed with money. " Juanita, a retired parochial school teacher with a magic touch at the slots, loved to regale me with tales of her exploits at Valley View Casino. I had never been there, so when my husband, Lou, suggested we take a quick trip to Las Vegas, I proposed an overnighter to check out Valley View's new hotel instead. So there we were, driving into the hills of Valley Center in north San Diego County's backcountry.

Six months ago, former nightclub singer Lynn Keath, 50, became homeless. She had only one place to go--the Women's Care Cottage in North Hollywood. "It got me through a tough time," said Keath, who moved into an apartment in the fall after spending two months at the cottage. "I still think it can happen to anybody. I lost control." One year after opening, the cottage now houses 14 women and children.
