Vast economic and political changes are reshaping the map of Europe, and already they are making a big impact on the nature of travel to the Continent. For the most part, Americans will find it is becoming easier to travel in Europe, although some of the romance of the journey may disappear. As headlines announce, Western Europe is moving inevitably toward greater economic unity; Germany now is undivided; Eastern Europe is struggling to reap the benefits of its new-found political freedom; Yugoslavia is enmeshed in a civil war, and who knows what ultimately will emerge from the stunning breakup of the Soviet Union.
