When Van Girard became women's basketball coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson three seasons ago, after a successful run at Lynwood High, he didn't expect the transition to go without a hitch. Girard admits that the coaching adjustment from high school to an NCAA Division II program was considerably more difficult than he anticipated. "I thought I knew a lot about coaching basketball before I came here and I found out I didn't," Girard said.

Van Girard cleaned house and the result is a new and improved Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team. The second-year coach replaced the anchors that weighed his team down last season with talented newcomers, who along with a handful of experienced players have led the Toros to their best start since the 1984-85 season. Before road losses to UC Davis and Sacramento this week, Dominguez Hills held a five-game winning streak, the school's third longest.

Junior forward Don Brotz of Wilson High School was named boys South Coast Player of the Year at a Times' awards brunch last Saturday. Brotz was the Most Valuable Player of the Moore League and averaged 23 points a game in league competition. The girl Player of the Year in the South Coast was Mandy Hannah, a junior guard from Compton who averaged 22 points a game and was Moore League MVP.

Fred Williams, former USC women's basketball coach, said Wednesday he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the UC Irvine job. Williams, 40, had a 33-23 record in two seasons at USC. The Trojans were 20-9 last season and reached the NCAA tournament. Williams, a former UC Irvine assistant, was one of five candidates interviewed for the position. He still has one year remaining on a three-year contract with USC.

Van Girard, who guided the girls basketball program at Lynwood High School to 10 consecutive Southern Section playoffs, has been named the women's basketball coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Girard, 34, replaces Alice Textor, who resigned last spring. He takes over a team that has seven returning players but struggled to a a 10-17 overall record, 3-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Van Girard, 34, who coached the Lynwood High School girls' basketball team to 10 straight Southern Section playoff trips, has been named women's basketball coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Swim for Heart Aug. 20 in Montebello More than 50 swimmers are expected to participate in Swim for Heart on Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Montebello City Park Plunge, 1300 W. Olympic Blvd. The event, sponsored by the city's Parks and Recreation Department, will benefit the American Heart Assn.

Anthony Jenkins of Pius X High School was named The Times' Southeast boys basketball Player of the Year at an awards brunch Sunday at the Anaheim Hilton Hotel. Jenkins averaged 23.9 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Southeast boys Coach of the Year is Bruce Carlisle, who led Whitney to the Southern Section Small Schools title for the second straight year.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's basketball team opened California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play Thursday night with a 75-34 victory over Chapman University in Orange. The Toros (8-5, 1-0 in CCAA play) limited Chapman to only nine points in the first half to set a school record for fewest points given up in a half. Chapman went scoreless for an 11:20 stretch in the first half after leading, 5-4.

The Marina High School girls' basketball team has only lost two games on its home court. But both times have been bitter disappointments. The first time, two weeks ago, Marina lost the Sunset League championship to Fountain Valley. The second time came Saturday night, when Marina was knocked out of the 4-A playoffs, losing 49-46 to a fast, aggressive Lynwood team. "We could've quit then (after the loss to Fountain Valley)," Marina Coach Mike Thornton said. "But we've battled."
