A 56-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a fire that swept through his Van Nuys apartment, fire officials said. The name of the victim was not made public. The fire broke out in an apartment in the 14000 block of Delano Street at 3:06 p.m. About 20 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 13 minutes, said Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman Greg Acevedo. No other injuries were reported. Damage was estimated at $35,000. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Firefighters knocked down a blaze Sunday that broke out at a Van Nuys apartment building, authorities said. No one was injured after the fire erupted about 10:45 a.m. in a third-floor residence at 6825 Haskell Ave., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. It took crews less than 15 minutes to extinguish the flames, the department said. Cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not immediately available. ALSO: Man shot to death in East L.A. The 69-year-old owner and manager of a Van Nuys apartment building surrendered to police after fatally shooting a 67-year-old tenant, investigators said Wednesday. Paul Davis was being held without bail on suspicion of murder following the shooting at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the manager's office at the building in the 15600 block of Leadwell Street, Detective Phil Morritt said. The victim's name was withheld pending notification of her family.

A fire broke out at a Van Nuys apartment building Sunday, forcing four people to flee and causing about $105,000 in damage, officials said. Los Angeles Fire Department crews knocked down the flames little more than 20 minutes after getting the 9:22 a.m call, said department spokesman Erik Scott. No one was reported injured. A smoke alarm allowed two adults and two children to escape the blaze on the second floor of the apartment building at 15740 W. Sherman Way , Scott said.

Los Angeles police seized 48 marijuana plants they discovered in a Van Nuys apartment that had been converted into a growing lab, authorities said Sunday. A warrant was issued for the arrest of a tenant of the complex in the 14300 block of Burbank Boulevard, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Michael Klein said. Authorities declined to release the tenant's identity. The plants were discovered Saturday when the manager of the complex was checking individual apartments for gas leaks, Sgt. Joe Brazas said.

Los Angeles police seized an estimated 220 pounds of cocaine Wednesday during a search of a Van Nuys apartment, the third-largest cocaine haul ever in the city, police said. The drug has a street value of about $62.5 million, Lt. E. A. Schiller said. He said he could not give the location because an investigation is continuing and no arrests have been made. Police said detectives carrying a search warrant found the cocaine in plastic bags and cardboard boxes.

Honduran authorities have arrested a murder suspect wanted for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend twice in the chest at her Van Nuys apartment, Los Angeles police said Thursday. Jose Herminio Carmona, 37, was taken into custody in Honduras on Wednesday in connection with the September, 1992, slaying of Alejandrina Guevara Lopez, 27, Detective Phil Morritt said. Carmona had confronted Lopez outside her Van Nuys apartment at 6841 Sepulveda Blvd., and demanded she go with him, Morritt said.

A young man who detectives today think may have been mistaken for a gang member was shot and killed in front of his Van Nuys apartment. The victim, 20-year-old Pedro Munoz, worked for a food distribution company and had no known gang ties, Detective Jim Vojtecky of the Van Nuys station said. Munoz may have been mistaken for a gang member because of his attire, Vojtecky said.

Steven Schulman, the man who made his way from skid row to winning a huge cash verdict after being run over by a semi, was found dead Tuesday. The 55-year-old was discovered in his Van Nuys apartment among several empty bottles of malt liquor. Schulman's bizarre rags-to-riches tale was recently chronicled in The Times . Soon after becoming homeless in 2007, the former plumber's legs were crushed by an 18-wheeler as he slept near the parking lot of an Encino market. The accident hobbled him and left him struggling to recuperate.

One man was killed Thursday afternoon in a Van Nuys apartment fire, officials said. Authorities said the victim, believed to be in his 20s, apparently triggered the fire while he was smoking narcotics in his bedroom. Two other occupants of the apartment rushed to safety during the blaze, and neither they nor anyone else suffered serious injuries. The fire was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. at the three-story building at 8070 Langdon Ave.

The bodies of two women and a man -- all shot execution-style -- were found Saturday afternoon in a Van Nuys apartment, Los Angeles police said. One of the women and the man were found with their hands tied behind their backs in the living room of a first-floor apartment in the 6600 block of Hayvenhurst Avenue, authorities said. The other woman was found naked in the bathroom, police said. All appeared to be in their 30s.

A 28-year-old man fatally shot his wife at a Van Nuys apartment complex Monday afternoon before he shot and critically injured himself, Los Angeles police said. The shooting was witnessed by the couple's 9-year-old daughter who ran to a neighbor's apartment for help, crying, "Daddy shot Mommy and then shot himself," police said. The shooting was reported about 3:15 p.m. in the 6800 of North Sepulveda Boulevard near Vanowen Street, a neighborhood lined with motels and apartment buildings.

Los Angeles police on Saturday were investigating the fatal stabbing of a woman who was found in her Van Nuys apartment, authorities said. Sgt. Robert Denton said the body of Helen Anderson, 51, was found at 6:30 p.m. Friday by a family friend and a boarder in her apartment at a complex in the 6000 block of Fulton Avenue. Denton said the boarder thought Anderson had suffered a heart attack and called paramedics.

Police on Sunday identified a man shot to death outside a Van Nuys apartment as 24-year-old Abel Rogero Acosta of Panorama City. The shooting, at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday, also left four other men wounded outside the apartment at 14646 Blythe Street, according to Los Angeles Police Officer Tim Bergstrom. Acosta and the four others were standing in a parking lot outside the apartment where they were shot by two or more gunmen, said Sgt. Fred Haptonstal.

Los Angeles police were still trying Saturday to piece together events surrounding the shooting death of a 24-year-old man in the courtyard of a Van Nuys apartment building Friday night. James Richard of Van Nuys was killed at 9:45 p.m. Friday in the 7400 block of Haskell Avenue, police said. He was later pronounced dead at Northridge Hospital Medical Center. Police say they have had difficulty getting information from witnesses about the unidentified suspect.
