When the Galaxy signed Swedish midfielder Stefan Ishizaki this winter, it had one specific goal in mind. “We needed to improve our passing in the midfield,” said Bruce Arena, the team's coach and general manager. “We do that, it allows us to get Robbie Keane close to the goal.” Three starts into his Major League Soccer career Ishizaki is already rewarding Arena's confidence, setting up Keane for the only goal the Galaxy would need in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps before an announced crowd 20,847 at StubHub Center.

Tommy Heinemann scored the equalizer in stoppage time on Sunday as the Vancouver Whitecaps battled back from two goals down to salvage a point with a 2-2 draw against Chivas USA on Sunday at BC Place. Coming off an impressive 3-2 victory at home against the New York Red Bulls last week, the Goats got off the mark just three minutes into the game when Erick Torres corralled a poor defensive header by Vancouver's Andy O'Brien and volleyed it home with an outstanding bicycle kick from just inside the 18-yard box. Chivas made it 2-0 in the 14th minute when midfielder Edgar Mejia whipped a cross into the box and Torres, who found himself alone in the area, nodded it into the bottom left corner.

If Jose Manuel de la Torre, manager of the embattled Mexican national soccer team, manages to keep his job through the end of the current World Cup cycle he may have Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez to thank. That's because Hernandez headed home a pair of second-half goals Saturday to lift El Tri to a face-saving 2-1 win over Japan in the Confederations Cup in Brazil. Mexico won't advance in the tournament, a dress rehearsal for next summer's World Cup, after losing to Italy and Brazil in its first two matches.

David Beckham has decided to extend his sojourn with Tottenham Hotspur in England by another two weeks rather than return to California on Thursday as planned. And the Galaxy's reaction to that? Basically, it was a yawn and a "so what. " At least that seemed to be the response on Tuesday afternoon, when the team played its first Major League Soccer opponent of the preseason. With Beckham almost 6,000 miles away and not really on anyone's mind, the Galaxy tied the expansion Portland Timbers, 1-1, in Carson.

After Manchester United's 7-0 rout of the Seattle Sounders in an exhibition game Wednesday night in Seattle, perhaps expectations should be lowered for the Galaxy's match against Manchester City on Sunday. Then again, perhaps they should have been lowered before the European clubs came stateside. "Teams come over here and look for fitness and they want to win these games," Galaxy midfielder David Beckham said. "And that's what they do. That's what their managers expect of them. " Going into Saturday, the two Manchesters, along with Real Madrid, had trounced MLS squads four times in the past few weeks by a combined score of 17-3, including Real Madrid's 4-1 win over the Galaxy on July 16. The exhibitions include a few variations from usual match rules — most notably the use of 22 players instead of the usual 14. "It's worse when an elite club can play more players," Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said upon learning of the Sounders' score Wednesday.

There have been times this season when the Galaxy has looked like anything but a champion. Good thing appearances aren't nearly as important as results when it comes to the playoffs, which the Galaxy opened Thursday by rallying for a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps at the Home Depot Center. Goals from Mike Magee and Landon Donovan during a four-minute span of the second half sent the defending MLS champions on to the Western Conference semifinals against the San Jose Earthquakes.

With time slipping away in a hostile environment and the Galaxy about to fall further behind the fourth-place Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday night, an unlikely hero emerged to tie the score in the 87th minute and secure a point in the standings. Eighteen-year-old Inglewood native Jose Villarreal notched his first Major League Soccer goal under dramatic circumstances to salvage a tie and help the Galaxy avoid digging a deeper hole in the Western Conference standings. "I don't know," the midfielder said of whether he can top that moment.

It may not be time for Chivas USA to start panicking just yet. But that time is drawing near. Because if the team is going to make a serious run at Major League Soccer's postseason for the first time since 2009, it will need to find some offense and some momentum -- two things it has lacked all season and two things that were mostly missing again Saturday when Chivas played the Vancouver Whitecaps to a scoreless draw before an announced crowd of...
