More than two decades after his futile attempt to draw Penn State's attention as a player, James Franklin was hired Saturday by the university as its football coach. Franklin, 41, replaces Bill O'Brien, who left for the NFL's Houston Texans coaching job on New Year's Eve. Franklin, who won 24 games over three seasons and went to three straight bowl games at Vanderbilt, signed a six-year contract reportedly worth about $4.5 million a season. He insisted he would not use the Nittany Lions as a steppingstone.

Reserve center Randy Neff made three free throws in the final 15 seconds as Vanderbilt held off Notre Dame, 60-56, Friday night at Nashville. Vanderbilt led, 57-50, with 1:31 left when Notre Dame's Donald Royal, who finished with a game-high 21 points, sparked a 6-0 spurt that brought the Irish within 57-56 with 16 seconds left. But Neff hit the first of two foul shots to put Vanderbilt ahead, 58-56, with 15 seconds remaining.

ATLANTA - What a tremendous break it was that the hotel I checked into did not have cable access to Thursday night's USC game at Hawaii. It meant not having to watch a game most Trojans fans probably turned off. It freed my remote to explore the exciting sights and sounds of Mississippi at Vanderbilt and then, more incredibly, Rutgers at Fresno State. If the first 24 hours of college football is going to be like this, we'll all be on medication by the end of September. You felt sorry for the NFL trying to counterattack with meaningless exhibition games, knowing no one feels sorry for the NFL once the real games start.

The "Sugar Bowl" chant began early here Saturday as 10th-ranked Tennessee romped to a 30-0 victory over Vanderbilt to clinch its first Southeastern Conference title since 1969. "I believe this is the most special and unusual championship team I've ever been around," said Tennessee Coach Johnny Majors, relishing a victory cigar. "I've never seen a team so stingy with their mistakes and so aggressive with their opportunities," Majors said of his 8-1-2 squad.

Dean Smith has been telling everyone that he doesn't have the best team in the nation and now he has some proof. Vanderbilt's Will Perdue had 23 points and 10 rebounds Saturday night and the Commodores upset top-ranked North Carolina, 78-76, at Nashville, Tenn. "As I try to tell people, we're not the No. 1 team in the country, not even the No. 10 team," Smith said. "But I do think we're a good basketball team. "I'm happy with our performance. We played even better than I thought we would.

Vanderbilt keeps changing coaches. Alabama just keeps winning. The 15th-ranked Crimson Tide defeated Vanderbilt, 20-0, Thursday night, extending its winning streak to 13 in a row over the Commodores and their third coach of this decade, Woody Widenhofer. Alabama is 36-2 against Vanderbilt since 1960. But Alabama, 2-0 and 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference, played poorly enough on offense that first-year Coach Mike DuBose was happy just to escape with the victory.

At just about every turn, Temple Coach John Chaney wails about how he doesn't know much about his team, which starts two juniors, two freshmen and a sophomore. But the Owls keep leaving clues. They held off Vanderbilt in the final five minutes to beat the Commodores, 67-59, in the West Regional semifinals Friday in the Kingdome. Temple, the region's seventh-seeded team, will meet top-seeded Michigan in the final Sunday.

Vanderbilt celebrated wildly, cheered on by sprinkling of gold-and-black-clad fans amid the sea of red. Georgia and its 92,000 backers trudged out of Sanford Stadium in stunned silence. The scoreboard went blank as soon as it was over, a feeble attempt to erase what everyone had just seen. A stunner between the hedges. Bryant Hahnfeldt kicked a 33-yard field goal with two seconds left Saturday to give Vanderbilt a 24-22 upset of No.

A look at the top four seeded teams 1. Syracuse. Omen alert: The Orange were undefeated at home in the Carrier Dome this season. The last time that happened, in 2002-03, they won the national title. 2. Ohio State. A four-point loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten title game cost the Buckeyes a No. 1 seed. But consider this: foul trouble limited Jared Sullinger to six minutes in the first half. 3. Florida State. The Seminoles won eight of their last 10 games, including victories over sixth-ranked Duke and fourth-ranked North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Gus Malzahn turned down a chance to take over as coach at Vanderbilt a few weeks ago. Maryland also reportedly flirted with him. In between, Auburn made Malzahn the highest-paid assistant coach in the Southeastern Conference, more than doubling his salary to $1.3 million annually and extending his contract. On Saturday, after the Tigers' final full practice before the Bowl Championship Series title game against Oregon on Monday, the coordinator who brought Auburn's offense to life said that "somewhere down the line" he would like to be a head coach.
