As noted by Lauren Beale of The Times on Tuesday, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant and his wife, Vanessa, are selling one of their two homes in the area. According to Beale, their Newport Coast home was put on the market with an asking price of $8.599 million. The property was last sold in 1997 at $1.7 million. In addition to the four bedrooms and seven bathrooms, the home features an 850-square-foot-gym, a hair salon, a theater and, naturally, a shark tank. Bryant was originally acquired by the Lakers in 1996 in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets (now New Orleans Pelicans)

The Lakers will wear short-sleeve jerseys during select games this coming season, according to Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com The short-sleeve experiment began with the Golden State Warriors last season, with mixed results. Emerging star guard Stephen Curry called them "ugly" after a loss to the Chicago Bulls in March. The Lakers' summer-league squad in Las Vegas wore white short-sleeve jerseys in July. The team's alternative jersey during the season will also be white.

The marks of greatness Kobe Bryant displayed on the basketball court usually came with a disclaimer. Bryant only won his first three NBA championships because of Shaq. He'll never match Michael Jordan's six rings, and if he does, the Bulls superstar will remain the better player anyway. Bryant may be the Lakers' all-time leading scorer, but he's not the greatest Laker because Magic Johnson is more likable and Jerry West won as an executive. There's certainly no way Bryant can match Bill Russell's 11 championship rings.

Vanessa Bryant filed for divorce Friday from Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, signaling the end of a decade-long marriage during which she stood by his side through allegations of sexual assault and admission of an extramarital affair. In the petition filed in Orange County Superior Court, Vanessa Bryant cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the divorce. In what appears to be an effort to keep the details of their split out of the public eye, the couple said in a joint statement late Friday that they had "resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant and his wife, Vanessa, are taking great pains to keep the details of their pending divorce under wraps by negotiating the terms privately. But legal experts said it's clear Bryant's wife will leave the marriage with a windfall. Vanessa Bryant filed the divorce petition Friday, citing "irreconcilable differences. " The couple then issued a joint statement saying they had "resolved all the issues incident to their divorce privately. " Celebrity couples like the Bryants turn to mediators — often a retired judge — or sit down with their lawyers to hammer out points of contention such as finances, community property and custody of children, allowing them to evade a public spectacle.

Earlier this month, Vanessa Bryant announced on Instagram that she and Kobe Bryant were officially back together, saying their "divorce action will be dismissed. " The Bryants' relationship may be all good now , but the couple is still irked by a rap line that was released during their estrangement. After Vanessa filed for divorce in 2011, rapper Drake said in the song "Stay Schemin' " that Vanessa didn't deserve a large sum of Bryant's fortune because "...you wasn't with me shootin' in the gym. " That line became an instant hit and has often been repeated by Bryant's fans.

Five years ago, when they were teenagers in Orange County, Laila Laine's stepcousin Vanessa excitedly pulled her aside. "She said, 'Guess who I met and guess who called me -- Kobe Bryant!' " Laine, now a Huntington Beach paralegal recalled, still laughing. "I said, 'Sure. Have another drink.' "No one believed her." If Vanessa Laine, then 17, was known for anything, it was for her sheltered life.

Former Laker Ronny Turiaf, currently with the Minnesota Timberwolves, attempted to one-up Kobe Bryant by jumping over a monster truck -- sort of. The spoof, released on YouTube via SportsNationESPN , parodies the 2008 video of Bryant leaping over a speeding Aston Martin. Turiaf does successfully jump over a truck outside of Staples Center -- except it's a small toy truck. Bryant's commercial for Nike's Hyperdunk shoes was certainly more impressive, but the dangerous stunt never happened -- it was produced in a studio with special effects.

The Lakers were already in midseason form, appearing 20 minutes later than scheduled for their exhibition game Tuesday. They arrived in plenty of time for tipoff, though their pregame rituals were rushed and the product on the court didn't come close to resembling the dominance that awaits around the corner. That's what Lakers fans hope, anyway. The Lakers lost to Utah at Honda Center, 114-80, and are 0-4 in exhibition play, losing by an average of 23 points. Unlike so many NBA teams, the Lakers thankfully don't come up with cheesy promotional slogans each season.

Greeted by a forest of upraised arms, Kobe Bryant received a warm reception Thursday in China. Of course, Bryant gets this everywhere. When he enters and leaves a Lakers game at Staples Center. At the London Olympics. And, in the case documented in the photo above, at an event in Wuhan in central China's Hubei province as part of his yearly Nike tour. Bryant told The Times in February that he found that the Chinese were especially welcoming when he hosted a clinic in 1998. "I enjoyed being around that," Bryant said.
