If love is a leap of faith, jumping into the deep end of too many bad romances can drive a girl to the edge. In Patrice Leconte's "Girl on the Bridge," Adele (Vanessa Paradis) stands on a footbridge near the Eiffel Tower, toes pointed toward oblivion. As she looks, bewildered, at the silky black waves of the Seine, Gabor (Daniel Auteuil) appears in the darkness, a mid-career knife-thrower in need of some inspiration. You seem like a girl who's about to make a mistake, he tells her.

In Jean-Marc Vallée's time-shifting question mark of a movie "Café De Flore," love is a force by turns organic, therapeutic, alienating and enough of a connective tissue to bind two seemingly incongruent stories. One of Vallée's parallel tales is set in 1969 and concerns a Parisian single mother (an effective Vanessa Paradis) of less-than-modest means committing herself fully to the developmental needs of her Down syndrome son. The other follows a present-day Montreal DJ (Kevin Parent)

Slick entertainment is rarely as, yes, slickly entertaining as it is in "Heartbreaker," a French romantic farce that is commercial cinema at its most successful. Given that Hollywood has all but forgotten how to turn out adult amusements of this type, it's especially welcome. A major box office hit in France, "Heartbreaker" took a certain risk in featuring two major dramatic stars, Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis, who'd never done romantic comedy before. You'd never know that from what's on screen, however, as both performers throw themselves into the parts with enthusiasm and panache.

Designer Jason Wu was almost as surprised as everyone else that First Lady Michelle Obama  once again chose one of his gowns for an inaugural ball. She wore a white one-shoulder gown he designed to her husband's first inauguration in 2009, and a ruby red Wu gown to the second inaugural ball on Monday.
