The Brazilian airline Varig has placed orders for as many as 26 Boeing jetliners in a deal valued at up to $2.6 billion, Boeing Commercial Airplane group said Tuesday. The order comes just one day after United Airlines placed the largest commercial aircraft order in history: $22 billion for as many as 128 planes. The Varig deal includes firm orders for six 747-400s and eight 737-300s, totaling $1.3 billion, Boeing said. It includes options for five 747-400s and seven 737-300s.

A disabled Brazilian jetliner crash-landed in a remote wilderness area of the Amazon basin with 54 people aboard, and 46 of them survived, the Aeronautics Ministry reported Tuesday. The news came two days after the Boeing 737-200 disappeared. The last radio contact with the Varig plane had come Sunday evening. It reported trouble with the plane's navigation equipment and with an engine.
