Yetnikoff Launches Record Label: Former CBS Records head Walter Yetnikoff has reemerged after a six-year hibernation to launch VelVel Records, a joint venture with Navarre Corp., a New York-based music and computer software distribution company. Yetnikoff has been working on raising money for an entertainment company since 1993 and last year was reportedly in negotiations to form a new label with movie producer Jon Peters. That deal did not materialize.

Alice in Chains guitarist-songwriter Jerry Cantrell is calling on a lot of friends to help him on his solo debut album, being recorded in Seattle and probably due in March. Among those guesting are bassists Les Claypool from Primus, Alice's Mike Inez, Fishbone's Norwood Fisher and Pantera's Rex. Alice drummer Mike Kinney is also on board. Cantrell plans to bring in several guest vocalists to back him, though he plans to sing the leads. . . .
