Ventura County elections officials are reminding residents that Monday is the deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 4 election. To register, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before election day and must have been a California resident for 29 days before the election. Residents can pick up registration cards at city halls, libraries, fire stations, post offices and the state Department of Motor Vehicles, officials said. Applications for absentee ballots can be found on the back page of sample ballots distributed to voters this week.

As the deadline to register draws near, 5.1% more people are registered to vote in this November's general election than in 1988. As of Monday, 345,305 Ventura County residents had registered to vote, compared to 328,458 registered voters for the 1988 election. About 78% of eligible voters are registered. Many of those who are not registered are ineligible because they are not citizens. Here are tips on how to register: Deadline: Registration deadline is Oct. 5.
