Ventura County elections officials are reminding residents that Monday is the deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 4 election. To register, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before election day and must have been a California resident for 29 days before the election. Residents can pick up registration cards at city halls, libraries, fire stations, post offices and the state Department of Motor Vehicles, officials said.

S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day on March 26 and a California resident for 29 days before the election. * Forms: Registration forms can be obtained by calling the Ventura County Elections Division office at 654-2781 or 654-2664. The elections office is at 800 S. Victoria Ave. in the lower plaza of the Hall of Administration. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Pleasant Valley Elementary School District officials have beefed up their arguments supporting a $55-million bond measure to upgrade educational materials and to repair and renovate schools. The district's argument to voters in the sample ballot for the Nov. 7 election must be submitted to Ventura County elections officials by Aug. 11.

Saying he has much left to accomplish in Congress, Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) on Monday announced his plans to run for his sixth term in the House of Representatives. Gallegly filed his nomination papers Monday at the Ventura County elections office after quickly collecting the 40 signatures of registered Republican voters needed to sponsor his candidacy. "My plate has been very full this past year," Gallegly said in a statement.

As the deadline to register draws near, 5.1% more people are registered to vote in this November's general election than in 1988. As of Monday, 345,305 Ventura County residents had registered to vote, compared to 328,458 registered voters for the 1988 election. About 78% of eligible voters are registered. Many of those who are not registered are ineligible because they are not citizens. Here are tips on how to register: Deadline: Registration deadline is Oct. 5.
