A proposal to share transportation, maintenance and other school services to help reduce operating expenses will be the subject of a meeting today among superintendents from eight Ventura County school districts. The Oxnard Union High School District, which has hired a consultant to explore the possibility of merging services with its seven feeder elementary districts, will be the host of the closed-door meeting.

On a single day this month, Linda Butcher treated two medical cases, conducted several hundred eye tests, supervised dental exams at a school, taught a first-aid seminar for teachers and was home in time for dinner. For Butcher, the only nurse for the Oxnard school district's 13,000 children, it was a typical day. "You should see it when I get busy," Butcher said from behind stacks of paper in her Oxnard office. "Any day can blow up on you."

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School District in Camarillo is seeking donations to purchase items ranging from basketball backboards to bookshelves for the district's 13 schools. After a school-by-school survey, district officials compiled a wish list of more than 50 items and repairs needed at various sites, Assistant Supt. Howard Hamilton said. The list includes musical instruments, classroom furniture, carpeting and electrical-wiring work.
